JNo - To Tag or Not to Tag?

A response I made in another thread, but I thought worthy of its own discussion:

Absolutely love that he has worked so hard to become one of the top, if not the best, corners in the league, but he will be 29 later in 2016 most likely playing under the tag.

I haven't seen any news about his expectations for a new contract, but we have to be careful with term and money.  What kind of contract would everyone be willing to give to Josh with age/salary cap implications?

Gonna have to pay him big (somewhere between 10 and 15mil per year), which is not out of the question, or tag him is what I am thinking.  Either way, I think he'll be a top-five-paid DB for the next three or four years, whether it's as a Panther or something else.

I love JNo.

He loves being a Panther.

But at the end of the day two big important things are left to consider:

1) He wants to get PAID. Like stupid crazy money that we probably don't have available to him. 

2) He is a great player in our system. I have my reservations with him on how he would do on most other teams however, and that's due to how the defense unit plays as a whole. Which brings me to my point. Let's say he is an above average (not elite like a Sherman) at best.  Theoretically if you plugged another above average CB into our system, wouldn't that person have similar results JNO has had?

With that said, regardless of his future at Carolina, I'd put money on we bring in additional talent via FA and draft.

At age 28, Josh has to be really realistic about his earning potential.  Now he could sign a 3 year / $40 million with the first two years heavily guaranteed.  If he's tagged, next off season he'll be 29, looking for a 5 year deal that he won't get.  There has been a tendency for good corners to go down hill at 30.  It's a similar situation to running backs.  It's not always true, but Josh has to be realistic.

If the Panthers let him test the open market, some team would throw $15 million a season at him, but chances are they will be a bad team.  Does he want a Super Bowl as part of a great team?  Or does he want to go else where, make some extra cash and hope they can be as good as us?

Part of that is up to him.

I hope there is some middle ground as I am sure he would rather have a contract than the tag.  

In a majority of situations with smaller market teams, the tag has always seemed to be a negative.

I have thought about the "system" and have wondered if that has helped JNo, but once our secondary started dropping like flies I watched his coverage and instincts and believe he is an elite corner.  He is more in the mold of Revis rather than Sherman (who, IMHO, dropped a level or two this past year).

I am not a contract lawyer or expert, but If we can get him for 10-12 mil per year, I think that would be the middle ground.

      The "now it's been three years" Grade for the 2023 Draft

      Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
