the letter should have ended after the word "shoulders" in the last paragraph.  i know he's just telling the truth in the last three sentences because the raiders were a mess and an enormous amount of pressure was heaped on him immediately but a prospective team doesn't want to hear it.

Eh, that's still BS. Again, a poo ton of pitiful QBs get 2, 3, 4 or even 5 chances (see The Golden Calf of Bristol and Sanchez). Why can't JaMarcus? He deserves at least one more crack at it.

Dag nab it. I wanted to say that. IMO, if you do a little checking, and he does indeed check out. Why Not? There sure isn't enough quality QBs to go around at this time. Or any time for that matter.

Now if you two would please go back and delete your posts, I can be first.

If I was a QB needy team, I'd look into him.  I mean, why not?  I wouldn't spot now because I'd be focused on the draft, but after the draft?  Sure.  Bring him in and put him through a work out and put him on the white board and see what he has, both physically and mentally.  All it would cost is a plane ticket.  It probably wouldn't work out, but again, low risk with potential high reward.

Russell was paid $36m by the Raiders to suck--a rookie deal he signed in 2007.  In 2011, his home was foreclosed on and he was broke.  in 2013, the Raiders had to pay him another $3m to settle his contract.  He was last reported to be living with his mother.

He spent over $10m per year.

To be fair, Sanchez may be bad but I don't know that he's Te-bow / Russell bad.

And yeah. Tim got another chance, but given how that worked out (i.e. giant waste of time) I'm not sure how strong an argument that is.

The furthest I'd be able to commit to Russell would be a tryout. And frankly I'd probably have to see something amazing out of that try out to commit a roster spot to him.

Also to be clear, I don't think Manziel is getting another shot either.

He honestly wouldn't be the worst camp arm QB in the world for us. He can freaking sling it and if that helps simulate Cam's rocket passes and makes our receivers better at catching them then that's likely a good thing. He had the strongest arm I've ever seen. No doubt he's still got some juice left in it. I doubt we would do it, but I feel like it's one of those it's so crazy it might just work ideas. Not like we would actually be considering putting him on the 53 man roster.

Russell does have one accomplishment he can hang his hat on.

He, along with guys like Ryan Leaf and Sam Bradford, helped get the NFL to come to their senses and stop paying rookie quarterbacks ridiculous money for their college accomplishments.

We owe Russell and others like him a debt of gratitude for the current slotted draft pick compensation system.

No he is not broke and he is not living with his mum.

Quote

In the fall of 2015, Russell was less difficult to track down. Various family members—one more delightful than the next, including an uncle who’s a college chemistry professor—had sent me periodic updates through the years. Russell is 30 now, single and not far from his playing weight of 270 lbs. He still has his wealth, living as he does on a plantation-style mansion hard by Mobile Bay. He still has his health—if he’s not in NFL shape, he’s not far off it. He still has his ambivalence about football, slipping between the past and present tense when he talks about the sport. Last year he even sent letters to select NFL teams, offering his services with a no-risk money-back guarantee.
