This is just a great read.

Awesome.  They still love Cam in Alabama

Gruden should go back and watch tape of Newton when he was at Auburn. Check out the run against LSU when he broke a tackle, shook two more defenders and beat the fifth overall pick in 2011 with 4.3 speed Patrick Peterson to the end zone.

Now that’s athleticism. That’s a freak of nature. That scared the (bleep) out of college teams and had pro scouts foaming at the mouth.

Lynch is not that. Not even close. He only ran for 239 yards, two touchdowns and averaged just 2.7 yards a carry last season. Lynch was sacked 17 times and went 1-4 in his last five college games.

In those four losses, Lynch completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 848 yards, but only threw three touchdowns, was intercepted three times and got sacked six times. In the last two losses to Temple and Auburn, Lynch passed for a total of 262 yards and didn’t throw a touchdown.

In his final game against a 6-6 Auburn team, Lynch went 16-of-37 for only 106 yards and got picked. To put that in perspective, Eli Jenkins threw for 277 yards, a touchdown and interception in Jordan-Hare Stadium in nearly leading Jacksonville State, a FCS school, to a stunner over Auburn.

Not Eli Manning. Eli Jenkins. And Lynch is like Newton? Ridiculous.

Newton threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns, completed 66 percent of his passes and ran for 1,473 yards and 20 touchdowns in his one-and-done year. He did all this in an offense that was basically Newton study body left, study body right, fake it and throw – and if all else fails, make a play.

No other offensive skilled player was drafted from that 2010 team. Offensive linemen Lee Ziemba and Brandon Mosley got picked – in the seventh round.

So with minimal future NFL talent around and playing against the nation’s best competition in the SEC, Newton put up ridiculous numbers, won the Heisman Trophy, didn’t lose and won a national title with the pay-for-play cloud hanging over his head – and Gruden is comparing Lynch to him?

Stop it.

Gruden only did that because when speaking with him Lynch said he modeled his game after Cam.  Actually Gruden tried hard to  convince Lynch that he didn't really want to compare himself to Cam.  Anyway, in my opinion Gruden is a tool.

I don't really like Gruden but he did preface it by saying he was doing it because he didn't have anyone else to compare him too.

More contrasts than similarities between the two IMO but suspect Gruden was using it for context.

The linked article actually DOES state a past QB that makes an excellent comparison as college players entering their rookie year.

...drop the mic

Basically, a QB who has demonstrated any degree of athleticism in compared to Cam these days. On one level it's flattering to be the standard by which all comparisons are made. On the other hand, comparing anyone to Cam is laughable. There has never been anyone like him and there may never be, he is a singular talent.

    • I think he's gone, and rightfully so, if he turns in another losing record. The "talented roster," regardless of how true or not, is a double-edged sword. If the roster is so much improved now from 202X then why are you still producing losing seasons? On one hand, maybe that's what needs to happen. Have the GM hire the new coach, and then have the new coach pick his guy to run his system. That is typically how it works in the NFL. Not the forced inheritance deal we have had in place.
    • Hinging on Brooks to be our spark...be good if it happens... but not holding my breath....RB next draft. Morgan gambled...it would be a 2 year payoff if thing happened.
    • Only way Canales is fired is if we are attrocious everywhere....  defense /special teams and offense..  There are enough "questions" on if BY9 is the guy that ownership wouldn't fire the coach for "just" mid qb play.  Especially with as talented a roster that has played "well enough" to win some tough football games and hang in there against the top tier of the NFL ...(mostly).   Now total team suckage..yeah .. but I don't see that happening.
