Football Outsiders sees rapid decline for 2016 Panthers with 9-7 record

Recommended Posts

“One of the variables in our defensive projections measures the loss of defensive talent based on Pro-Football-Reference’s approximate value stat. Only six teams since 2003 have lost more approximate value over replacement than the 2016 Panthers. Most of that is Josh Norman, but Carolina also needs to replace veterans Jared Allen, Roman Harper and Charles Tillman.”

Allen was non existent in the pass rush and only good for snuffing out screens.  We improved with Harper gone and Charles was good for a forced fumble every 4 games but a liability in coverage.

They predict us to win the division with atl and no at 7-9 and tb ar 6-10.

However, 9-7 would be a disappointment for me after last year.  If the nfl teaches anything though it is that there is very little separating the top and the bottom which keeps it interesting.

if the schedule turns out to be the gauntlet it looks like on paper 9-7 might be more like an 11-5 or 12-4 for a team with an easier record

oh and that scott kacsmer guy at the bottom is one of michael procton's favorites and is well known as a huge cam newton naysayer if the tweet referenced isn't proof enough.  he was one of the salty douchebags crying at the end of the year about how carson palmer was a better MVP candidate.

Allen did well, but will we miss him? Probably not. What did he have 2 sacks? Great against the run sure but so was everyone else on the line. Losing Norman will hurt. I don't see how losing Harper will be tough, but I could be wrong. If we go 9-7 I will be shocked. I though the good teams got easier schedules, what happened to that?

regression after 15-1 is obvious and we face the AFC and NFC West divisions which will be tougher, but I can't see 9-7 without major injuries or the draft picks being terrible.

Tougher defenses, not tougher teams.  Huge difference.  Haters pooh pooh the QBs/WRs we beat last year.  Well, if true, this slate should be a breeze.

    • All I heard was uber rides, weight trainers, and t shirts??? Maybe some meals too........ What a monster and he should be tossed in a rusty wood chipper!!!1!11!!!!!
    • This is from 5 months ago. It was one or the other. Trade for one or draft one. We apparently called the Jets about Wilson. We also talked to the Seahawks about Metcalf. Drafting our own guy was the best course of action given the required investment. Regardless now is the time for Bryce Young to produce. We are fourth amongst all teams in cap spending on the OL. Back to back first round picks at WR and multiple young TE draft picks now. Very solid and respectable backfield. New pieces across the defense. The time is now.
    • That was just the worst time to have their worst game of the season. One key deal was the broncos guess the Panthers would NOT change any plays or flow to the game. Another key point overlook that bronco defense was truly one of the best in the NFL history. It was the best defense the Panthers faced that year, by far. They were not ready for it, but broncos were ready for the Panthers. Mix in that bad luck, poor refs showcase, and this is the golden boys last game........ Panthers needed to win by 20 and the broncos defense was not going to allow that.  Panthers were the favorites and I believe they also thought that it was going to easier than them destroying NFC playoff teams as they marched to the SB. I've heard darin Gantt say the play calls were to give remmers help, but for some reason the team never did it. During the year they never had that problem, so maybe never practiced giving help via TE/RB, or WR chip. Cam was superman that year, no need for any adjustments...... Until you meet a legendary defense with studs at all levels, Think about it, Peyton was throwing wingless dunks for the whole season, the defense had to carry his corpse to the SB. That's how good they were, not many defense are able to get to the playoffs and win a SB without decent QB play. If you recall the beginning of that defense took Tim Teblows and his non-throwing arse to the playoffs couple years before. That's insane the level of defense needed to overcome.
