James Bradberry's Draft Diary

Mr. Scot

Quote

The playbook is totally different from the piece of paper to when you’re on the field and people are coming at you full speed. When we were in the meeting room, I had it all down, but on the field, it was different. I got confused a couple of times, but nothing big.

I feel like I am a quick runner and that I showed them that. I feel like I could communicate. I am quiet off the field, but there is so much communication on the field in the Panthers defense because there is so much motion, that you have to call out the plays. I was doing a little of that (at Samford), but with the Panthers, sometimes the CBs come over and that kind of thing didn’t happen at Samford.

I’m becoming comfortable with (being verbal on the field). Sometimes, just because I’m new to it, I’m hesitant to call out things because I don’t want to be wrong. There is so much you have to think about. The offense motions so much … you have to think about what the offense might do post-snap. And you have to think about the rotations of the safety and they sometimes come over to help the DBs and you want the help. There are a lot of variables.

All of those "variables" he mentions is why I think it took Norman some time to get comfortable in our system. Now, I am not saying Norman is in anyway stupid or a slow learner, but I think Bradberry can pick this up a lot quicker than Norman did (not to mention that Norman was kind of hardheaded in his first 2 years). There will no doubt be ups and downs for our rookie CB's this upcoming year, it's how fast they can pick up our system that will determine whether we will be superbowl contenders or not come playoff time.

Thanks for sharing Scot. However I expected a diary about his draft day, you know, an explicit description about fixing toilets and getting a M$ phone call meanwhile. I can only imagine him laying behind the toilet, screwing, dirty wet hands, phone between shoulder and ear, talking to DG and RR. ..

You're in luck, as the link at the bottom of the page takes you to that entry.

"My mom was in my ear to go fix the toilet seat. We had bought a new toilet seat and it didn’t seem to fit right, so toward the end of the second round, I went to go fix the toilet seat.

Then my phone rang and I saw it was a North Carolina phone number, so I answered it and the coaches told me … I couldn’t really hear a lot because there was so much screaming in the house. Then we celebrated and screamed and stuff and then we all watched my name come across the board. And then they called me back and had me talk to the PR guy, then things settled down, everyone was kind of in shock."
