"To show you jackasses at 37 I can still play"

Love Steve Smith, SR.  Hate to say it but it was time to go.  Not because he couldn't play but because he felt he was above everyone else in the locker room.  Locker room leadership is very important.  Steve had an attitude that wasn't commensurate to the clubs direction.  At least that is the way I took it why Gman let him go.  I wish it could have been different.

Dare to get a friendly 'ban' bet for a month in regards to his yardage?  I bet he'll have over 500 before game 8.  On the other hand, I do believe he'll retire a Raven now.

I do believe he will retire a Raven.  Just to thumb his nose at Gettleman, if nothing else.

I thought players can't choose who they retire with? Wouldn't he just automatically retire a Panther and Raven?

Either way we got his best years. When he wore black and blue he was one of the best ever.

Sucks because he should be on this squad right now.

They can retire with any team they've played on.

I love Steve Smith, he played with heart. He'd still be a Panther but he wasn't ready to play the role of #2/#3 WR nor was he ready to turn the keys over to Cam as 'his' team. Had Steve been receptive of a contract and role similar of being a #2 WR then I think he would still be here. Given that, I'm happy that it's Cam's team and Benji/Funchess along with Cam will be together for the foreseeable future

I agree.

if he stays healthy and puts together a good year i bet we'll see him hemming and hawing about coming back next year too

I doubt it.

Heard a sound bite on Sirius last week where he basically said he was tired of having the constant pressure to perform. Honestly it sounded like he is ready now to call it a career. I believe much of his motivation these days is to put up some more numbers for hall of fame consideration. Moving forward into a post football broadcasting career that could be huge.

No, no its not.  Not valid at all.

More dangerous?  LOL, what?  Like seriously, Jerry Rice is the GOAT for a reason.  Hell, I would take Randy Moss over Smitty too.

Greatness is determined by a lot of things. The team you played on, the health of your career etc. Smitty is never going to match Rices numbers. But between the 20's Smith at his absolute peak is just as good those guys. Playing with Joe Montana and Tom Brady makes a difference. You wouldn't say Wes Welker was better than Smitty but his numbers with Brady said he was just as good. Yet we know he's not.

He didnt have the height to be a redone force, but he had his fair share fade catches. Smith is a completely different WR than them. But if he played with Manning or Brady for 2-3 years he sure as hell would have even more respect than he does now.

I wouldn't say he's the greatest all time. Pound for pound I might say he's the best. But still that's 185 pounds. That said I think he is most definitely a top 10 WR all time.

Smitty was always the greatest when the going got tough.

Moss was a bitch when the going got tough.

Jerry did his thing but dont forget the numerous times Montana has been heard talking about how they cheated just like the Pats.

Of the 3, I would take triple crown Smitty. If it's a close game, Smitty is the guy that gets better and better as the game goes on.

A receiver like Smitty is all the Panthers needed in the SB to loosen up that defense and give Cam a quick outlet that always fought to get open for his QB. The KB and Smitty combo would have been devastating for opposing defenses.

You can't really say that because you have no idea if he would have stayed healthy all the way to the Super Bowl.

    • I suppose it depends on what you mean as 'elite'. I typically mean someone that can play with lower level pieces around them and still win. There are very few of those.
    • It would obviously be incredible if Brooks came back and just ran away with the job on his opportunities like Rico Dowdle did last year. But any Panthers fan that has been around the block knows better than to go ahead and make plans for that. Brooks has missed a ton of not just playing time but meaningful early career growth in a league that has increasingly devalued the position from an investment standpoint beyond one or two superstars. There's really not any comparison to look back on that lines up with the current iteration of the league at least not favorably. The key thing that this RB room has going for them is our investment in the OL. The highest paid OL in the league two years in a row paired with our staff should make it easier for just about any RB to get into open running lanes. But that is also anything but a given considering our OL was largely middle of the pack last year. In the end it might all be a moot point anyways if we again struggle to establish a viable passing attack.
    • I don't have him making the team and I think same goes for the staff, but they are hopeful for a PS spot.    I mean of course I'd like 3 all-world at RB and every spot, just doesn't work that why. Panthers normally carry 3. dan always talk up Etienne, even called him a future star.....I think Brooks will be fine as a 2 with health pls.....  Chubba can carry a seasons load as lead dawg.    Its fine, I mean backup OGs or CB is much higher on my worry scale(Id even put QB room as worse than RB room too...)
