Voth: what went wrong in the first half?

Football is a game of inches.  Last year, those were in our direction.  Against Denver and Minny....not so much.

Guys need to stop the dumb play killing penalties, Cam needs to protect the football, and when a ball is put in your hands as a defender, you need to come down with those.

All things that can be corrected. Last week was a rough week for everyone in Charlotte. Why should we expect football players to be any different? I was definitely not as focused at work as I usually am. The talent is there, and they've proven they can execute in the past, so I trust they will right the ship. We lost by 12, and 9 of those points weren't on the defense.

Good eye, our defensive tackle did a horrible job by knocking down a pass. *rolls eyes*

Agreed. While it would have been sweet if he had snatched it out of the air and took off running, I'll take a knock down from the rookie DT. The article isn't really calling Big Vern out though, just pointing out missed opportunities.

This is not the place for being level-headed and reasonable. I'm going to need you to kick the cynicism up a notch, going forward. Thanks.

I apologize, I'll try harder.

BAIL HARDY OUT AND RESIGN HIM!  FIRE SHULA!  CUT GINN!  BENCH REMMERS! DRAG DICKSON BEHIND THE STADIUM AND PISTOLWHIP HIM! PUT TOLBERT ON A DIET!

Damn I hate the look on that safety. Had Dickson open short and didn't throw it his way. The other part that seems to confuse me is that it looks like Cam was looking the way of the defender when he got past Oher and he still hung on to the ball. I guess he was expecting Norwell to pick up the block but that is an incredibly dangerous decision while in the end zone.

Oh yeah and on the Funchess drop we had a guy open short on the right that looks like he might have given us a 1st down. Given Funch should have made that catch but the other option looks to be an easy 1st. Meh, oh well HOPEFULLY they will view all this stuff, learn from it, and fix these issues going forward.

Sometimes I do feel Cam needs a game or so to remind him he isn't actually Superman.

That play is an example, sometimes gets too confident in his ability to hang in or escape the pocket.

The first half was a prime example of what can happen when you let a good team hang in there.  Should have been at least a 3 score game after the first.   The offense is its own worst enemy right now.

This team has been a tale of two halves for a while now (that is almost 100% coaching); it just seems that they typically get up enough points so when the 2nd half collapse comes they can squeak it out.

cause the players are not holding themselves accountable for their mistakes and the lack of focus?

I think a lot of times, he's more concerned with trying to make something big happen, and misses several easy opportunities.

YES!

I've been looking at what has happened whenever we start a drive inside our own 20. (Often due to penalties or bad ST play...)

10 drives start inside the 20.

1 score (10%)  /  4 turnovers (40%)

Last year, on drives starting inside the 20 Panthers scored nearly 3 times more often (28%), and turned over the ball only 15% of the time.

Good news is we're scoring MORE often so far this season when we start with good field position.

Got to limit the mistakes when we're backed up against our own goal line (and avoid starting there in the 1st place...)  That should help if we can improve in this area.

well, at the end of the day whose job is it to have the players ready to go? and i'm not simply talking about a players being focused/unfocused problem.

if this were an uncommon occurrence i'd tend to agree it falls on the players on an individual basis, but we've seen this club consistently look flat in the 2nd half under the rivera regime. our staff seem slow/unable to react sometimes.  like they collectively get that rivera, dear in the headlights stare going on.  they are good at getting the ball rolling, but once they start to get figured out...

    • I don't believe it's as easy as saying that anyone believes that Rico had the 10th best day on offense. Grades are done in a vacuum inasmuch as they can be. By their very nature, skill positions are always going to account for more "production" in reference to stats, and RBs perhaps even more than WRs because they touch the ball more. You can't look at PFF's grading system, or any football grading/grading system (like perhaps Football Outsiders or Next Gen Stats), so simplistically. If a player has an excellent day, relative to his position, relative to his assignments, and relative to his number of snaps, then he should be graded highly. It's up to the reader (or the analyst, if you will) to put what you're seeing into context, and that's not only in relation to the grades, but the general situation (like whether a player is playing injured, who they're playing with or against---the general situation). Even the fact that (presumably) PFF or news outlets put out a list of the highest and lowest grades, that doesn't mean that said players were the most impactful of the day, it just means that they did or didn't do their job the best, based upon a certain set of parameters. PFF is a part of life for football analysts, talking heads, execs, coaches, players, and even fans (even if indirectly), all to varying degrees. It is a tool that is used by all 32 teams. Obviously it's not viewed so dismissively by franchises as a whole. Execs obviously don't look at it as a bunch of bozos making sh¡t up on the fly. Fans can berate it or swear by it, but it isn't going anywhere.  The only thing that I can tell you is that perspective and context matters.
    • Im not big in to PFF but their guys were raving about his blocking along with our other skill players in the run game. https://youtu.be/D4kL_N97cFQ?si=sJWSZCUA1bj5otyx
