Mike Tolbert pays $3,900 bill in change

... kinda petty. Especially if you have the money like Tolbert. Talk about going out of your way to make a stupid point ... People like that crack me up.

That's a lot of money for some of us, but not for Tolbert. He could have let it go. For my income, I generally won't make a big stink for anything under $50. Even after $50, I may let it go if it is not worth the aggravation.

Really disappointed in Tolbert. I've had tons of work done at this shop and I've seen what they were doing to his car.

These guys are very professional and good at what they do and take any form of payment except the cashiers check that Tolbert tried to pay with.

He has a early 70s model Cadillac that he wanted to swap a modern ls3 into. While the engine bay is big enough to easily hold the engine the wiring harness alone that it takes to make a modern day engine talk to a car from the 70s makes it a little more than a simple swap. Despite all that they were able to swap the motor as asked by Tolbert. The issue was the aftermarket suspension he had on the car. He had 26 inch rims on the car and a suspension lift to make them fit..which worked fine with the old 350 motor in the car. But with the new ls3 being much lighter it caused the front end to sit much higher. When they told him it was going to be extra to complete the job because of these issues he wanted them to do the job for free because he was Mike Tolbert...sorry for the mini rant but these guys have always taken great care of my car and do amazing work.

people who know that cashiers checks are a significant fraud and scam risk

I know Craigslist advises that you do not accept them.

I think Tolbert could have paid the bill with a credit  card and been done with it. I own a small business and I wouldn't take a $4000.00 check from  a customer that was acting suspicious about paying his bill. If you give the customer the merchandise and you accept the check  you are pretty much on your own.

If Tolbert was in the right then he should have contacted an attorney and let the attorney handle it for him.

It's obviously Mike Tolbert. A phone call to the financial institution takes all of a couple minutes. I use cashier's check for business all the time. A personal check may be different.

Being in that hobby I can tell you that motion lab has a history of doing poo work and having poo practices.  I side with Tolbert here.

Bottom line, if they didn't do the work, no matter how much labor was wasted (probably not all that much, but I don't know because I'm not there), then you can't charge. If Tolbert's party supplied all the parts like they said, then its basically a 3900 labor cost in which nothing was really done with the car. Company has to write most of it off at that point, or at the VERY VERY minimum stay true to their quote. Or they should have quickly realized that they incorrect parts wouldn't work and ceased working on the car instead of just throwing more labor costs at it.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
