Freeney vs CJ

Just wanted to ask the question, why is it that the Falcons are able to get more out of a 36 year old DE than we can get out of CJ who's only 30?.

I think opinion will differ on this related to many things! The slant put on CJ is he has only played well when he's had a good edge rusher opposite him like Hardy or Allen etc, obviously most have mentioned his contract status and the fact he got overpaid by Hurney, I think his double digit sack seasons are behind him so my expectations aren't above what they should be, but he should still have enough in the tank to make an impact when you consider the age difference and the quality of LB behind him and of course McDermott's schemes which before this and part of last season has always seen the D-line rely on edge rushers for pressure.

Freeney did a hell of a job for Arizona last year too and he looks great opposite Beasley! I just don't get it CJ is far younger so he should be on par atleast no with the production on field? Is Beasley getting doubled allowing Freeney to play one on one with the tackle? Is CJ being doubled so he can't get any pressure or sacks? Or is it CJ isn't motivated anymore? Or is his engine just gone and the fuel tanks empty?

CJ got illegally leg whipped in 2013 and after that year he hasn't been the same since. Freeney is quicker faster, CJ is bigger stronger. I still have no idea why starting 2014, CJ decided to lose weight. His size and strength is what made him. He had good hands and power. He lost his power, rendering him useless

I think one thing no one really mentions....

We drafted Johnson in 2007, at the age of 21. So while he may only be "30" he has been in the league for almost 10 years when some players who come out at 23-25 ten years they are in their mid 30's.

He started since 2008, and he obviously has looked faded late 2014, and in 2015 had only 12 total tackles, 5 solo, and only 1 sack. In comparison in 2013/2012 etc he was averaging around 30-40 total tackles and 10-13 sacks.

Freeney has been around since 2002, was a top 15 pick for a reason. What he has benefited with is since 2012 (same time frame CJ has been in the league) he has only played in 40 games, averaging less than ten games a year. He isn't expected to start on all 3 downs, and is brought in situationally. If CJ was like that would he look as gassed? No idea but yeah, there is a reason Freeney could go in the HoF and CJ won't.

Freeney is one of the goats and his spin move will go down in history as one of the best ever. He's so good at it that he can get it done no matter what age. CJ doesn't have a specialty move like that. CJ was a great DE year after year but is simply old now and has no moves like that.

Agree with you about Freeney. Maybe semantics but I never thought CJ was "great". He had a decent 4 year run starting in 2010 but only got into double digit sack numbers 3 times. ( just barely)

As another poster said Freeney is just better. CJ is slightly above average for his career and bottom third last year.
