This is one million percent correct. The team's Super Bowl window is nowhere near close to closing, but his window is almost shut. Cannot tell me the window is closing when Cam is 27 and Luke Kuechly is 25.

You can't prepare for the future if you don't plan and invest in the present lol

Glad to see other people are getting it. Gettleman does not get it.

Gettleman is more interested in his projects and player development than he is for the team as a whole and the value lost in years like 2014 and 2016.

It is closing. The windows are real. The Panthers only have so many seasons with Cam and Luke leading this team. Every year tearing down their supporting cast is a travesty. The combo of two young leaders at the top of the NFL on opposite sides of the ball are to be leveraged to the hilt.

I would hope the Panthers learned from the 2004 season when Steve Smith went out for the year. The combination of two WRs like Muhsin Muhammad and Steve Smith with Ricky Proehl as the #3 was a gift the offense rode in 2003.

2004 looked like another special season, but it disappeared with the loss of Smith.

Then the loss of Muhammad to the Bears in 2005 held the Panthers back. Smith was able to carry the team to the NFC Championship, but the lack of a receiver like Muhammad next to him allowed defenses to push all the coverage to Smith. That hurt against the better defenses in the playoffs.

2006 saw the addition of Keyshawn Johnson in his last year struggle while Smith was out to begin the season.

Then 2007 saw the loss of Delhomme to a devastating injury.

It was not until 2008 that Delhomme, Smith, and Muhammad would return for one last run together. Delhomme and Muhammad gave everything they had at the end of their careers and Smith had another great season. The trio forced defenses to leave the box and a young Stewart and Williams both ran for 1000 yards with Muhammad coming 77 yards short of the Panthers also having 2 1000 yard receivers. A season to remember, and a playoff to forget as Delhomme hit empty while giving every last bit of himself on a window the slammed shut in the post season.

2009 was a valiant effort, but we all knew Delhomme and Muhammad were done.

The defensive line we all loved lasted for 6 seasons and was done at the end of 2007.

Windows are real. Learn from history and understand probabilistic outcomes. The offensive passing threat we thought would stay together for that decade only had 2 legit seasons together, and both were great because a team was built around them. The effect of injuries and free agency took away 5 of those expected seasons. The Panthers only had 1 season in 2003 with the offensive core and defensive core playing together.

Anyone who tells you there is a future to an NFL team at the top of its game does not know how to run an NFL team. A future is only good for a team with no immediate success in front of them for the next season. These teams are rebuilding. The future for teams at the top of their game is next year, and next year only. It is the responsibility of a GM with a team at the top of the league to hold the core together and have a strong safety net planned with young reserves to step in with the inevitable downfall of the vets from year to year.

TD paired with Luke will end with an injury or with time. Cam paired with Olsen will end with an injury or with time. Expecting that time to be continuous or lasting is not a good plan in the NFL. Build around them and give them who they want every year they are together.

A GM ripping apart the core of the team at the top of its game for the non existent 'winning' future of the team is ludicrous.

Windows are real.

Here is a quote for Gettleman and Rivera to hang in their office:

Quote

At the very moment you are taking joy in something, present yourself with the opposite impressions. What harm is it, just when you are kissing your little child, to say: Tomorrow you will die, or to your friend similarly: Tomorrow one of us will go away, and we shall not see one another any more?

- Epictetus

Plan for that in the NFL when you are on top. Do not plan for this nonsensical idea of future for a team on top of the league that has yet to win the SB championship.
