It needed to happen. I don't think them bumping heads necessarily came from a bad place either. But the separation was needed. I don't like way it was done though.

Regarding how it happened: To be fair, given Smith's temperament, there was precious little chance of this process going smoothly and easily.

There was pretty much zero possibility of Smith not being pissed in any scenario where he didn't leave on his own terms.

How does this hurt Carolina's rep?  Sounds like Smitty was the problem.  No one in the organization said anything negative about him.

There are contentious situations between players and teams on a regular basis. I've yet to see it affect any team's ability to sign other players.

NFL players in general tend to be comfortable with the "it's just business" aspect of things.

Hell, players still sign with the Browns, and that team's been a s--t show for decades.

The only issue I had with with releasing Smith was that releasing him actually cost us cap space for that season.  The dead money or whatever they call it, and the additional Cap space we used signing his replacement.
