Our offense lacks a big play threat sorely, it's a huge weakness

Watching the Redskins last night, their offense had a knack for creating big plays. With guys like Crowder, Jackson and Garçon they have a slew of guys that can stretch the field vertically. We don't have anyone that can get behind the defense on a regular basis. Cam has a cannon, but he doesn't even get to use it much because no one is a true threat vertically. I think Ginn was supposed to be that guy, but he's clearly lost a step and has shaky hands anyways. He did have that 38 yard TD Sunday, but I honestly bet that's been one of our 2 or 3 longest TD's this year. Redskins had TDs of 44 and 70 yards last night.

The read option has been debunked at the pro level and team needs to figure it out 

In many ways this team is an old run and shoot offense.

I don't disagree per se but I have also noticed we don't call as many deep threat plays this year, or at least that is my perception watching the games. In my opinion one has to do with the other, ie, we aren't calling those plays due to a lack of weapons OR we aren't giving guys like Ginn and Philly (and possibly Funchess) enough chances to make those plays because they aren't being called with any frequency. It isn't clear to me which is the bigger factor.

Lack of speed is one of our biggest detriments. Our fastest receivers is 31 years old with bad hands.

I don't think personnel is the problem.  its play calling and design.

There's a hint of that, but it was greatly exaggerated by going against the depeleted Green Bay secondary. They've been really, really, really, really bad and extremely short handed due to injuries.

We don't lack a deep threat, we lack an offensive line (mainly due to injury) to provide time for strikes, we lack a running game that forces an 8th man into the box regularly to give our receivers one on one opportunities. A lot of our issues stem from the trenches, it all starts there.

With regard to Washington's big plays last night being used as a reference, it sure doesn't hurt that GB's defensive backfield is arguably worse than Carolina's. At one point they flashed a graphic of QB ratings against each individual corner, and the lowest was 122 - 2 of them were in the 140s.

The bad part of line play and play calling is if you know your line is suspect, then why call plays that take a long time to develop?

Hurry up offense or get the ball out of Cams hands faster or screens etc.

But all of this is dead horse beatings.

I agree with this. The time it takes for defenders to go 5 yards to get to Cam is far less than the time it takes our receivers to run 40+. With time, we have players who can make big plays. See: Funch & Ginn last two games.

I still think it's unfair to call Funch or KB a true "deep" threat. We don't have a speed guy that can get behind defenses, we just don't. But that doesn't mean they can't be big play guys, especially KB. Sometimes I wish we'd just throw the ball up to him, especially when we are lacking momentum. Just give him a chance to make a play

We do have a speed guy that can get behind defenses.  Used him a lot last year. Named Ginn Jr.  Still fast, still makes defenses respect him.  However our line is far worse than last year over all.  Couple that with this year we are focused on the big possession receiver. Good receiver but can be taken out of play on any route that's not a slant.   When ever we heavily feature Greg Olsen(who is always a mismatch problem), good things happen all around. Keeping Olsen in to block on anything that't not a run play is a god damn travesty. That is one of the few things I put solely on Shula. All that other stuff is a combination of bad line play, and Cam mistakes in my opinion.    Love me some KB, but Greg Olsen should be the focal point of our offense like Gronkowski is in New England.

Big plays require enough time in the pocket, something that has sorely been lacking this year. We'd need more plays that maximize YAC but our personnel isn't tailored to that.
