I know you guys love a good fire Shula thread but....chew on this

Carolina has put up some historically horrible games on defense this year.  This is not a fire McDermott thread but one to point out there are some extreme issues going on here far bigger than Shula.

I do believe as disappointing as the offense has been the defense is the bigger disappoint on the season.  3 of the worst defensive performances in franchise history now belong to this team. Not only have they been destroyed they have given up by NFL standards huge leads that teams hold even with bad offenses.

So my question is...(let's assume you want Shula fired and he is)...now, how do you explain and act in regards to an even worse embarrassment than Shula's offense if you are Carolina?

Good points.

But, frankly, outside of generating a lot of turnovers last year, the defense wasn't very good last year either.

Its the offense that has fallen off the cliff.

So in 3 games?

We miss a lot of good players

We weren't missing a lot of guys in all 3 of those or games where the D lets people back in (where the O has gotten the brunt of the blame)

Defense is atrocious, I hear adjustments are never made on offense....but adjustments aren't made on defense. This is especially bad when the HC and DC are suppose to be as good as they are.

and that is another point, unlike on offense we invest heavily on defense....yet  it likely is the biggest disappointment.  So how does Carolina "address the issue" this offseason with the defensive joke?

If you fire Shula for the O what do you do about the D?  How can it be a coaching issue for one and not the other? Offense has a better arguement for not having enough talent IMO.

I'm just going to be real, it's a head coaching issue. We've seen flashes of what the offense and defense can do with controlled aggression. But too many times we see both sides get killed when playing way too conservative. Who knows maybe even Ron is responsible for telling Cam not to run.

It's one thing to have rules and guidelines, but it's another to watch such rules and guidelines cost you game after game without making adjustments until it's too late.

Our OT depth is terrible but IMO, the worst position on this team is DE.  Our defense is completely built around getting front 4 pressure and the DE's have been awful.  DT (especially KK) haven't been much better (at pass rushing).  Those same DE's have been awful at setting the edge for run defense, Ealy is a huge culprit.  There has to be some serious moves made at that position if we want to return to being successful next season.
