A while back in All Pro, I mentioned that if we were to go looking for a new head coach, there were a couple of possible candidates with past ties to Gettleman that I knew of. Not gonna go full bore coaching search mode here, but I'll share my thoughts on the topic (for entertainment purposes only).

My initial two candidates were Eagles offensive coordinator - and first ever Panthers quarterback - Frank Reich, and Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. I've since discovered a third, that being Bills offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn.

Reich was getting more attention early in the year but his star may be fading a bit as the Eagles fall back to earth (in part because their receivers are awful). He might still be a year or two away from serious consideration, but then we might still be a year or two away from looking for a head coach anyway.

Shanahan is still hot - arguably the hottest in the league - but there's rumblings the Rams may be hard after him since firing Jeff Fisher. Hiring Shanahan would mean changing to a West Coast system, and it's debatable how good that would be for Cam Newton. He and Gettleman are acquainted through dad Mike.

Lynn is a hot name since rejuvenating the Bills offense after Greg Roman was fired. He and Gettleman were only in the same place (Denver) for a single year. Still, Lynn is getting praise for the creativity of his play design (something we could really use) and might be worth a look. He's also a high character guy who's overcome a lot of adversity, as this story attests.

Other possible candidates that don't have direct Gettleman links include the usual batch of Patriot coaches (who never seem to succeed on their own away from Belichick), Lions DC Teryl Austin and a few others. Someone will probably mention Tom Coughlin but I don't see that happening.

Bottom Line: I don't think Rivera is getting fired. I'm not even willing to bet on Shula being fired. I agree with Igo that if anyone's out it's probably a position coach or two.

But hey, ya never know.

"Riverboat Ron" hasn't coached here for a while now.

As to the WCO, I've generally said the same thing, but someone did mention the possibility that a timing based offense might actually work for Newton.

That said, Newton running a modernized version of the K-Gun under Reich intrigues me a lot more.

I'm a fan of Sean McVay, the OC for the Redskins. He's 30, but he knows his stuff- he's been a coach in the NFL since he graduated from college- 8 years. And he graduated from the U. I'd love to have him here- really sharp between the ears. I know it's a pipe dream, but he is who I'd replace Rivera with. Regardless of how healthy we may be next year, I'm honestly not looking forward to it. Ron Rivera is not capable of winning a Superbowl. Rivera and Shula feel a lot like Fox and Davidson at this point. I'm done with racking up wins in what is essentially the garbage time of our season. Football is about winning Lombardis- nothing else. I won't have any hope of winning anything significant until Rivera gets canned.

Don't know much about McVay. Agree we need a change. Don't see one happening.

      He's a hard player to rank, cause he is a young NT. I do see his abilities to branch out among the DL. That's the only way for him to land in the 1st, some team has to believe he's got the stuff to play DE or T3.... I just don't see using 19 on him, I feel there should be around 7 players just ranked higher than him for the Panthers team.  ___________________________________________________________________   Now you are a roster nut like me. That tells me to trade up! Bonus the 1st+3rd gets in front of TB yucs. Then use one of the 5ths+2nd to draft another target. That's your two starters and use the 4th, 5th and 6th for the development OTs and what ever the best player are at the pick/DB. The last couple years they have added 2-3 UDFA each year, maybe the same this year too. Soooooooo Im normally 95% trade back, but above made me change my mind. I do not want to waive 5th rounder, I feel thats high with players on the bench.    ??
