Butler leads the way for defense in impressive shutdown performance

The Panthers’ rookie first-round pick Vernon Butler had his breakout game of the season on Monday night, with an impressive all-around performance in the interior. All season he has been limited as a rotation player along the line, but with his performance tonight combined with the Panthers being all but out of the playoff race, he could see some more snaps in the final three games of the season. On the night Butler had three hurries and a batted pass, which resulted in a pass-rush grade of 79.9.

The only thing that kept him away from multiple sacks was being held numerous times, I was yelling at the refs through my tv

Him and Mario got held. When they called us for hands to the face, a quarter earlier, Trent Williams had Mario in a head lock. I'm pretty sure you can't do that.

Critical of the pick, but this is good to hear and it was good to see last night. Also, been hard on Worley, but according to PFF, he had a great game as well. I'm also glad for that.

I know we all go back and forth in here, and I've been critical of Gettleman, but I do want to see all the picks work out. I want to be wrong. Some of our older players like TD, Olsen, and Kalil don't have much longer. We need the picks to contribute and perform at a high level if we're ever going to get close to the mountain top again.

The crazy thing is, I think we may have 2 of 3 of those positions covered as far as our future

I don't know if you have noticed, but C Tyler Larsen has really been showing up. I think with mentoring and reps, he could be  Kalil's future. He was a UDFA in 2014.

For TD, Shaq Thompson is his obvious heir.

We just need to find a TE to learn in the reins of Olsen. This TE draft isn't eye popping, but it isn't bad. Quality 2nd and 3rd rounders could come out.

If you look at the game box score, Vern is only credited with 1 solo tackle. You have to look at the film to really gauge his true value.

This next draft will be our best opportunity to find Stewart's eventual replacement too. I think we it's a must to address it this year with one of the stud running backs available

G-man's draft picks and UDFAs continuing to develop and show out.

It's absolutely nuts the % of picks he hits on that are not only still in the league, but are active contributors.  I'm not sure any other GM comes close the last 4 years, and he did it with the albatross of Hurney's contracts in that span.

And to think some of the geniuses around here wanted to run him off at 1-5.  He would be hired somewhere else within an hour.

RB class this year is DEEP. I will be very upset if we aren't able to grab at least one of them. So many quality options in each round.

    • Damn I liked A'Shawn too. This is basically a heads up we're planning on cutting you move.  Robinson wasn't the best but I loved his attitude and effort on the field. He held that entire dline together when Brown went down iirc..granted we finished that season as the worst rushing defense in modern NFL history.  If Wharton would have performed up to atleast half of his salary last season, I'd feel a little better about it. We do need that cap space though.
    • 13. Carolina is coming. The Panthers are well thought of around the league. Their "process" seems sound. I think their off-season will be very interesting to keep an eye on. They made the playoffs, but they're not yet knocking on the door. (Offense was 26th in EPA/play.) I think it's imperative they don't overestimate where they are in their build. They can't throw a ton of money around in FA to "make a run now". They need to be intentional about building a solid foundation. (IMO) And from what I know about the team... I think they will be. Sidenote: I have my eye on offense there, not defense. They HAVE to leave next season with a strong opinion on Bryce Young. They need to put pieces around him to do that. Can't be left wondering what he would have looked like with "better OL play" or "more pass catchers". They have to know. (That part is purely my opinion. No one told me that.) https://x.com/lindsay_rhodes/status/2027212533417869499?s=46&t=xeIgh_-Vr2aKxBkBJdfnKA
    • Because this DL is completely reliant on Brown being available and being a stud. Without him we were the worst D in history. The Wharton signing last year reeked of desperation. He just isn't a great fit for us schematically and I think we panicked a little bit when we missed out on Milton Williams who would have been a great fit.
