Jake Delhomme

Jake's greatest strength was belief. He believed in the players around him and he lifted them up. Steve Smith might have never become who he is if Delhomme hadn't believed in him so much and just kept throwing at him praying for miracles.

He was a leader and a motivator. We saw him pick the team up on his first time at QB and bring them from behind for a victory. And he took us to our first Superb Owl and was the catalyst of the Cardiac Cats success and the near heart attacks we suffered each week.

And lastly, what a story of never giving up and keeping on working to make it. Inspirational.

But there's a whole generation that will just remember when it fell apart, and they'll throw stones at the guy.

Honestly, Jerry Richardson might have created the Panthers, but Jake gave us our first identity.

The guy had heart and soul like no one else. And many times, he proved that that can be just enough to make it.

Best QB in Panthers history

I love Jake, really my favorite Panther of all time, favorite NFL player of all time, but I'm going to hold off on Best QB in Panthers history, though. Cam is something magnificent as a player, even though he has had a horrible year. He will be the best QB in Panthers history and can make at least a stake in that claim already.

However, Jake was the best leader in Panthers history. If you could put Cam's skills and talent in with Jake's heart and leadership, then you'd have one of the all time greats to play the game.

Cam's still young, though, and hasn't had to really fight through the adversity that Jake did to make it. How Cam comes back this coming season may tell us a lot. Cam's got excellent character, but I hope he grows and learns from this. He might need to spend some time down in Louisiana speaking with Jake.

It's hard to remember sometimes that Jake already had a few years being in the league before he came to Carolina. Didn't see the field much either so his early struggles weren't out in the open. Cam has had to deal with adversity out in the open for years already.

Personally, I don't compare the two that often. Jake brought something special to this team as does Cam right now. They have raised the bars on what we want out of a Panthers quarterback and to ever find one that could exceed all those bars is asking for a miracle.

For those that never got to see the Panthers under Jake, this is a perfect example:

You have everything there. There was the bad with the interceptions and a perchant for fumbling the ball when hit. Then you have the good with hitting a big play when needed (Proehl was the man on key third downs). Then the best is the almost Brady-like ability of creating those game winning drives.

Good to see old names too. Almost forgot about Mike Minter.

I don't think anyone can top Jake in terms of being one guy that changed the course of a season. Coming in 17-0 at halftime, at home in Game 1 in 2003, and leading the offense to victory (while giving the defense a reason to get at it hard) was something Panthers fans had just not seen. That it led to a NFC title and a SB appearance made it that much greater, even though the victory the week after at Tampa was probably more defining of how the team was going to work.
