Assistant coaches hired so far in Buffalo...

Defensive Coordinator Leslie Frazier (very good DC, head coaching experience)

Offensive Line Coach Juan Castillo (an old Eagles colleague; generally considered one of the best line coaches in the NFL)

Linebacker Coach Bob Babich (also one of the league's better coaches; formerly worked with Rivera; has been a DC before)

Looks like he's hitting it out of the park so far.

The one move I'd question: McDermott is retaining current Bills Special Teams Coach - and former Panthers ST guy - Danny Crossman.

so he isn't using Madden to build his staff?? Any inkling he needs a good OC with pedigree of Shula?

What is it about ST Coaches that freaks HC out? We are taught that there are 3 phases to the game. Yet it seems like almost every HC throws just any ol' coach at it? I mean, is KC the only team that takes ST seriously?

It does appear as though guys are not afraid to join his staff. Says a lot about how well McD must be respected. That franchise has been a mess for a while. Yet guys are willing to go there for him. Well done.

I saw part of his PC today. The wife even sat through it. We were both impressed with him. He looked calm and collected, and the stage defiantly did not look too big for him. He did say that the GM would have complete control of the 53, but he was confident, after all their meetings, they were on the same page.

He also said that Buffalo was the best job available, and that he had always been impressed with the fans. He looked forward to instilling a new culture not only in the team, but throughout the whole building. He would be methodical, and do his due diligence, as he always had, and how he had been taught.

A Buffalo beat reporter asked him if he was nervous taking the Bills job considering the Bills have been a mess for a while now. Which kind of made me laugh. That a beat reporter would say the team was a mess. McD said no. That he was comfortable with the conversations he had with management. He even said the owners were good guys, and only cared about winning. Which made his decision to take the job pretty easy. He truly sounded like he trusted the Bills to do the right thing going forward.

He sounded like he knew he belonged. He even mentioned how he was from a football family, so there were always football related conversations going on. And he was going to take everything he has learned to go methodically about his business.

I was both proud for, and impressed by, him. I truly hope he succeeds. It really is a win win for him. If he wins, he is a hero. If he loses, it was Buffalo after all.

Crossman has been in Buffalo since 2013. Maybe he's done well.

I have to wonder if that is because he is doing well? Or if McD kept him because he knows him, and he doesn't want to go looking for a ST Coach? I guess other coaches would/should know who is a decent ST Coach, and who to stay away from. Or do you give a younger guy just getting started that job?

I may be wrong. But it sure seems like a lot of teams could use a decent ST Coach. I mean, look at the Giants last week. Their return guy may just have cost them that game.

Does he know him? From where? He left Carolina 2 years before McDermott arrived.

From what I know, he is retaining him from the previous staff. I can't think of any way their paths would have crossed. Is McD keeping him because he is good? Or because he doesn't know anyone better? Or maybe, McD finds it easier to take what you are given, rather than search for what you want?

Which leads me back to where, at least from where, I started. Do HCs scour the brush for ST Coaches? Or are ST coaches just another coach doing double duty? Nah, that ain't right.

Because to me, it really seems like STs is a league wide struggle. I mean, I realize that most ST guys are those marginal guys that are hanging on by a thread. But those ST Coaches can't be in the same vein. Hanging on for dear life? Barely making it in coaching because no one else wants to coach STs?

Maybe it is as simple as, if a return guy is good, it doesn't matter if you game plan or not. He is going to get his. That no matter what you do, ST is just going to play out how it is going to no matter what you do.

Man, too much thought at too late a time for this.

I think ST coaches get too much credit and too much blame. IMO it's so much more about the ability of your depth to play it. There might be some ability if some coordinators to get a little more out of what they are dealt but it's not like drafts are approached with ST as anything but a secondary thought.

McDermott's latest hire is Jim Skipper's son Kelly for RB coach.

Kelly has a bit of a history with us. It was on his recommendation (via his dad) that we drafted DeShaun Foster over Clinton Portis (Kelly was Foster's college RB coach).

McD also hired Rob Boras for TE coach, another solid choice.

Bills could be interesting to watch this year.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
