Captain

Voth seems to think that he'll be coming back here...

Of course many here probably still remember his comments about Funchess and about how our team can't come back from being down which he talked more about than most would think to, but aside from those very minor comments this really does make perfect sense. Captain has been by far our best nickel corner in the Rivera era and would be huge for Wilks to dial up some more corner blitzes, to have another veteran presence back there, and another playmaker in the secondary. I really like LJ and would absolutely love to bring him back but Captain is definitely an upgrade on him and having both of them would provide excellent depth there, especially since Captain is capable of jumping outside occasionally if needed to spell Daryl or James or if they go out with a minor injury. Thoughts on bringing him back? And maybe we'll bring Major Wright in this time for real and have both a Captain and a Major in our secondary. I'm sure Rivera would love that leadership.

I'd rather he not come back.  He's not an upgrade anymore.  For depth on the cheap? Sure.

Have you watched him play with the Vikings? He's absolutely still an upgrade. One of the best nickel corners in the league right now and fits extremely well in Rivera's scheme where he'll be even better.

Why wouldn't we? Not gonna cost anything. No reason not to have him back for camp at least and go from there.

"They" told me the organization isn't too high on him. I'm with you though - no reason not to have him for depth. He seems like only a Nickel guy though - is it normal to have more than one Nickel on an active roster or outside guys who could play inside in case of emergency?

Interesting. Thanks for chiming in with this. I guess it would depend on ability to play ST (which I don't think LJ has) and if he can move outside temporarily. Captain can do that not sure if LJ can. But if you think about having Captain as our nickel and LJ backing him up there, with Captain's ability to move outside and LJ able to replace him at nickel if that happens I don't think it would be bad to have two nickels like that on the roster. Not sure if RR would do that though. With this though it seems more likely we target a reunion with Captain.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
