Most likely will lose Klein......

Sadly we will lose an outstanding back up and I wish him success.

That got me to thinking.  You really have to be up on who's on what other teams roster.   I can say I am pretty up to speed on our roster but I could not name many on any other rosters.

Are there potential free agents from other teams that fall into the same situation as Klein? Been a good back-up for 4 years and now ready to start?

I'm not really sad about this. We got our value out of him and now he gets his pay day. Its the way things should work.

Yeah, Klein put in his time, but was stuck behind Luke, can't blame him for wanting to go spread his wings and earn more money.  While we do need quality behind Luke, Klein is more expensive than Mayo, who is under a rookie contract.

You hate to see us lose such good depth but I completely understand.   You didn't work your ass off to get to the NFL to say you played behind the Great Linebacker Luke Kuechly or Thomas Davis.  You want to make your own mark.  I just pray he doesn't go to a fellow NFC South team.

I think he does. I think scouring the scrap heaps is one of the things he does well. I know this name brings up nausea in most, but Remmers was our starting RT in 2015 and played very well save a couple games (one big one, yep, aware). Same with Addison, both guys were waived and release by other teams. Addison has blossomed. We've also lost some guys it would have been nice to keep like Snead and Barnidge (gone pre-DG, but same point) but you can't catch them all. It's still good to find those guys. Teams that do well on the scrap heap tend to have top teams (like Seattle and NE). Finding cheap talent that other teams throw away or UDFAs makes for cheap talent if they work out.

Exactly, let someone else overpay, realize the mistake, cut bait and we swoop in with the reclamation project.

Good business right there.

As much as people quote the Pats for their big name FA signings, they are kings of the bargain basement and compensatory picks (only team with extra 3rds this year and last). They hardly ever overpay, but they will take one year deals like Talib and Revis. I think we may need to do a little of that more, like with Short this year. Squeeze the best out of him like Revis and then let some team like the Jets sign him to a big deal and watch him decline in the middle of it.

Diving into the FA market just to dive in is stupid.  Sometimes teams let players walk because they want too much money.  Other times it is because they aren't worth the money they want.   We, especially under DG, have done much better with the 2nd tier Free Agent than the big name.  Teams weren't knocking down the doors for Mitchell, Ginn and Coleman but we brought them in and they excelled in our system.  Mitchell really cashed in on us.  I wish we could have kept him but it shows our FA system is the way to go.   Smart and frugal with a well thought out big splash when needed.

I think next week, we'll make our first big splash but I also think we will address other needs through the scrap heap as some like to call it.  DG likes to go into the draft with every position of need already addressed through FA.   Whether it is bringing in competition or someone who we expect to start.   I would bet we will get one of those guys we all say "Who?" than listen to the staff and know we have the next really good player for a good price.

When you typed this it reminded me of a an episode of America's Game featuring the 1973 dolphins.

Miami probably had the best O-Line in football from 1971-1974. All 5 starters from that era were either cut or traded by another team before they ended up with the Dolphins. They're discussed at the 16:00-21:00 mark just in case you're interested.

if we don't address MLB in free agency - and Klein signs somewhere else - we shud get at least a 5th round comp pick next year.. which makes me believe Getts wont address MLB in FA.. he covets those comp picks, you know.. that's why he let us flounder at the CB position in the beginning of the season - so we could get the 3rd rounder in this year's draft..

    • OL then RB would make heads explode but its might not be too unlikely
    • Wonder if we draft a RB. Seems like a lot of eggs in Brooks’ basket right now.  And the OL, no kidding. If that running game goes to hell with what we have at QB, you can forget competing. It is so much more important than sticking another wideout on the field. Take your wideout later.
    • I have lots of different thoughts on it. This argument, the primary thing is I don’t like seeing him or anyone, being convicted on hearsay and/or pure speculation. Which some are doing.  I don’t care That much about defending Morgan as I do about the criticism being fair minded.    You sort of assert that Dan was just a yes man. I don’t think we know if he ever pushed back against Fitterer but I have this instinct thing that needs me to satisfy the question of: if Tepper was so down on a Fitterer as to fire him, why in the world would he hire his carbon copy? I guess maybe he wanted a yes man.Like I said, lots of different thoughts.     I am just not gonna judge him that harshly based only on speculation. I am sticking with what he has done starting when he was hired as GM. Maybe I am more lenient because the first season for him and Canales, I gave both a pass. Said I would judge them after the first year. Stuck to it. If you can get to the reality that neither were ready for the job and say okay give them a year get their feet wet, it looks a lot better.    And we are not bound to Bryce yet. Yes, for yet another fuging year he can probably marginally improve and slide by like he has been doing. But if they add even more people and he regresses? I think we could see some relief.    The QB room? As I understand it, Pickett was Canales’ choice. If we need to blame people for poo. In a sense, he is very Bryce like. So makes a good plug in. I get that a little bit. We still have the draft. If they do better than Jake Plummer or Hooker I’ll know they are trying.
