How Would You Feel About John Ross at #8?

You would have a problem with picking an athletic specimen with amazing tape after last season, but did you have a problem with us shooting ourselves in the foot following '15 by unnecessarily rescinding the franchise tag from the market's top corner, then drafting nothing but defensive players in the first 3 rounds despite having those same issues you mentioned on the OL and needs for depth/talent infusion at RB and WR?  We've had the same issues for years, but "we use FA to set us up for the draft" and "we don't draft for need."  If those things are true,  then picking Ross with our first (even if that means trading back), might be the best move we could make.

I didn't mind rescinding the tag but was obviously disappointed we didn't do "a lot" with the money after GMan said "a lot" could be done.  A franchise can be rewarded by sucking however since the cap $$$ rolls over and we netted the #8 pick in every round.  I only care about winning the Super Bowl anyway so I'm happy how things worked out with the Falcons choking.

GMan isn't finding a partner then trading back, foregoing inevitable studs at 8, and letting the Saints pick their DE of choice while we settle for John Ross.  Simply not going to happen.

Fournette has bum ankles and I'd have no problem with him at 8 either. Sometimes you just have to take the risk.

Ross just played a full season after his knee issues with no setbacks and still ran a 4.22. His shoulder doesn't concern me. He played through it and he is getting it fixed now that it's the offseason. Luke did the same thing and and it didn't hinder him at all.

Heck no!!

trade down to 16 maybe.  Let the combine dust settle a little.  Kid is a solid WR.  But he is at his peak now.  He didn't do any football drills today. He did the track portion let's see what he does football wise that crowns him a potential top 10 guy.

i called it back in December.  WR rankings are going to go Williams, Ross, Corey Davis

Fournette is the guy we have to get.  People keep getting wet dreams about some playmaking WRs, scat AP backs etc.

But this is Gettleman/Rivera/Shula ball.  We need the Hammer.  Our offenses is power run. 100% look at our coaches identity.   We don't spread it out we don't do jet sweeps, pass the ball 40 times a game, etc none of that.  We power run under center, we power run from the shot gun.  We do some zone read but our staff has been vocal how they want Cam carrying the rock less.  Gentleman is probably having wet dreams right now over Fournette and Stewart hammering the ball.  Especially after seeing Brandon Jacobs and co smash their way to the Super Bowl.  Those Giants didn't have a superstar OL,  when you can't stop the sledgehammer.  Your pass rush is going to struggle mightily.

This draft is deep at RB but honestly so is the slot quick WRs. 4.2 is great but that 10-20 split time is more important.  40 shows what you can do with the ball once you get open.  Those shuttles show how you can get open.  And this class has plenty of them who catch well and run good routes that will be sitting there round 3.

A Fournette 1 and a Zay Jones or any of those smaller guys who ran sub 4.5s. Beats anything you combine Ross with.

I'm starting to warm up to the idea to OJ at 8 if Garrett, Allen, Safeties and Fournette are gone.

The only way I see Ross is if we trade back with Cleveland at 12 and pick up and extra 2nd. Then I could possibly see it if they like him better than OJ but I don't really see it.

Doesn't fill in any position of need, and Byrd is making strides. I don't think he'll be considered that high.

You can argue that the RB, TE, DE, and Safety class is deeper, but still you'd rather have an impact player that high, and there are many slot receivers in this draft we can hit on later

position of need?  Our offense is predicated on having a deep threat speed receiver.  There is a reason that Ginn has looked better in our offense then any other.

With Ginn being a free agent you could make the argument that it is one of our biggest needs on the team right now.  Even if Ginn does resign how many more years does he have?

I'm not saying he will be, or should be, the pick at 8 but I doubt it will be as much about need as the fact there are other players maybe rated higher.

We obviously share common ground on enjoying the falcons epic implosion lol...  but, i doubt gman cares what other teams do with their pick in respect to ours if he feels like the guy he wants is there.  If he believes in Ross and Ross is his guy, who the Saints pick is of little consequence to him...  he's shown that mentality with all of his drafts.

And again, a big part of my proposing this approach is that personally, while the idea of drafting a Fournette is exciting, i fear there is a strong potential for him to bust.  He took a beating in the SEC and his running style isn't conducive to longevity.  Plus, there are stud RB prospects in a deep class of them available later in the draft.  I just dont think RBs are worth 1st rounders very often anymore, with a few exceptions.  Now, if it was a conversation of picking Ross vs a top pass rusher with our first, that would make me hesitate...  the DE FA class is woefully thin and it costs more to address in FA vs S, RB, or OT.  But, I just don't see any other prospects at those positions that could be better weapons/pros than a healthy Ross at 8 or later...  just my opinion.

Actually the bust factor is way way higher with Ross and its not even close.
Yes Fournette took a beating. Yes he had some injuries. But Gurley took a bigger beating and missed more college games due to injuries. AP got worked in college and took a beat and had all sorts of injuries, he played in just as many games as Fournette.
His running style isnt worse than Bell. Ross has had Major injuries, ligament injuries. We dont spread it out 3-4 WRs like GB, NE, Atlanta, KC, SD etc etc. Everyone says well look what Ginn has done. You want to know the secret why Ginn has done so well here? Here's a little secet........................Playaction. It all stems from the power run game. Take away that run game and Ginn is just your avg guy. You get any "Quick" WR injected in to this offe se we run when that freight train run game is rolling with momentum, that WR is going to look like a damn Stud.
Ross in the 1st no.
Ross in the 2nd as a playaction weapon yes, but you have to get that run game rolling first.
Sadly Ross wont fall to the 2nd after this combine, but there are a bunch of stud quick slot guys sitting there for us to grab in the 3rd
