Shopping at Tiffany's doesn't always Equal Wins

Winning the NFL Free Agency is a myth. By spending the most money in FA doesn't always equal wins.  Ask the Dolphins, Browns, Bears, Bucs, etc.

The smart organizations and the teams that are always at the top of their division and in the playoffs usually spend the least amount of money because they are smart with their cash.

That's why teams like the Patriots, Packers, Steelers, and yes our beloved Panthers have been competitive in the past several years.

Examples:

2011 Eagles the "Dream Team" went 8-8

2012 Tampa Bay Bucs spent $162.4 million record before 4-12 record after 7-9.  Biggest signings Vincent Jackson, Carl Nicks, and Eric Wright. Jackson only one left.

2013 Miami Dolphins spent $159.9 million record before 7-9, record after 8-8. Biggest signings Mike Wallace, Darnell Ellerbee, and Brandon Gibson. Don't think any are there still.

2014 Tampa Bay Bucs spent $152.4 million record before 4-12, record AFTER 2-14. Biggest Signings Michael Johnson, Josh McCown, Alterraun Verner all are gone.

2015 New York Jet spent $182.2 million record before 4-12, record 10-6 (improvement) Biggest signings Revis, Cromartie, Buster Skrine, Marcus Gilchrist, James Carpenter.

2016 Jacksonville Jaguars spent $230 million!!! record before 5-11, record after 3-13. Biggest signings Maliek Jackson, Kelvin Beachum (cut) Tashaun Gipson, Chris Ivory

Teams that are successful consistently know how to spend and when to spend.  It is frustrating at times getting caught up in the "What if we signed _____"  Overall I think Gettleman has done more good than bad.

Just my 2 cents.

However, spending at the bottom has gotten none of those teams a SB win. Denver and the Patriots spend average or better and have SB wins. Just saying. I do not like a team dumping tons of cash to free agents but decent spending does equal SB wins according to that chart.

The only "free agent" champions I can think of recently are the Broncos, with Ware, Talib, Sanders and others that contributed to their run. Of course, they mortgaged their future for a Super Bowl in Peyton's twilight years, but it paid off so :/

The Broncos actually have more cap space than us

Getting players in the door and filling roster holes, while managing cap space is just the start.  Having the tools in place to know how to use them, and continue to develop them is where the SB champions start to shine.  So far, we only seem to have half of that equation in place.

this post was more for those wanting to buy up every Free Agent that gets released and posts about someone like DJ Fluker, Brandon Flowers, Mario Wililams, etc. getting released and wanting to sign every one of these guys.  I see most of you are savy enough to know its about smart spending not over spending.

Yes, successful teams do spend and sometimes do get a "big name" but what some fans don't realize is the weight of the contracts outside of that first year.

A lot of those teams don't have the core or QB that we currently have intact. We're much better off talent wise. We don't have to win free agency but we could bring in a big impact free agent to put us over the hump. How long have we've been clamoring for a LT to protect Cam, a WR to pair with Smitty or one to replace him, a DE to take over an aging CJ and departed JPep  and Hardy? We never seem to do anything but rely on the draft and vets on prove it deals. We found Bradberry at the cost of losing Norman but how bad was the secondary this year? And this is a team that was coming off a SB appearance. C'mon man!

On a side note, we need some of the cap geniuses that the Browns, Bucs, Jags and Dolphins employ. Sure they have sucked but they continuously have a ton of cap while being players in FA year in and year out.
