QB Cam Newton: A Reflection On Playing With His Throwing Shoulder, And How He Believes He "Achieved" Something

When one considers the injury Cam Newton underwent last year against the Chargers, anger seems to be the common tone as far as reaction. The idea that Cam Newton could've possibly been saved the need for an off season surgery with an early benching/diagnosis is all too present on many people's mind, and lashing out on the coaching staff seemed to be the obvious conclusion.

However, one thing that never came out was Cam's opinion.

In a nice article by new Panthers media team member Bill Voth, he discovers Cam Newton's real feelings and thoughts on his shoulder injury, and why he believes he's achieved something through it all.

CHARLOTTE – Cam Newtonicon-article-link.gif isn't the reminiscing type.

He loathes talking about the past and usually dodges reporters' attempts to get him to analyze moments or mistakes well after they've happened.

But after working on the side Wednesday while his teammates went through the third day of offseason workouts, Newton admitted he's wondered whether playing the final four weeks of last season with a partially torn rotator cuff was worth it.

"But at the end of the day, I felt as if there was another thing that was achieved," Newton said.  "I wear the 'C' patch on my jersey with great pride, and I feel as if it comes around again, would I reconsider it? Yeah, but also knowing those guys that I'm going to give every single thing that I have to give for this game, for the fans, for my teammates, especially."

Three weeks removed from undergoing surgery on his throwing shoulder, Newton isn't on the same program most of his teammates are this spring. Instead, he's following a cardio-heavy plan put together by head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion.

"I'm getting the mojo back," Newton said, sweating through a Nickelodeon-themed Under Armour hoodie. "It's not as tragic as some people made it out to be. But I'm still being a professional about it - still getting treatment and making sure I'm getting stronger with the rest of my body as well.

"RV is doing an unbelievable job with managing a lot of things, but I'm still trying to maneuver and add different aspects that may be pushing the pendulum, but it's just that push to get back."

While Newton wants to hit "fast forward" on his rehab, he isn't expected to be allowed to throw until late June but remains on track for an all-clear by the time training camp opens a month later. So as long as there are no setbacks, Newton's insistence on playing through an injured shoulder shouldn't have much of an effect on a new season.

"Was it smart? People may say it wasn't, but at the end of the day, I think the bigger picture was I'm one of the leaders on this team," Newton said. "I just want to set a good standard that, listen, the team comes first and I'm just going to put myself in position to try to lead this team as much as possible."

"It's not as tragic as some people made it out to be."

Let those words resonate from within you.

Cam Newton will be back better than ever.

*Kudos to @Cary Kollins to linking this article in another thread. Personally felt this more than warranted its own thread.

    • I am trying to remember when I EVER said reach for need. My thing if someone falls you jump, if you can trade back a few slots and get help at the right value and pick up some ammo to move up from 51 which I think is outside the money zone, then you do that.   Take a WR later. Plenty of capable WRs have come from the 3rd round. Though this year I would go for C there if there was a reasonable choice. Take a TE if you must. I see more reason to take WR than TE. I think you give guys drafted two years ago and last year a chance to develop before cancelling them.    I think it is kind of unrealistic to throw everything all in on offense in hopes of going deep in the playoffs after an 8-10 year, even if it did have some nice bright spots in it.    And outside of this argument but relevant to it, I am bothered by Canales and Morgan and their apparent posture that we have arrived and are now in the big boy club. I don’t know where that comes from. They are out there talking like they are winners at 8-10. Backing into the playoffs in a real convoluted tie breaker scenario. They had some good games, yes. But the big feather n the cap, the LA Rams matchups, did you see what the Rams did? They didn’t fire the coaches but they fired their defensive backs. Bryce beat them yes, and it was pretty, but it was kind of like the Bucs and Mike Evans picking on our decimated secondary in 2022. Someone (Wilks) went down for allowing that to happen and they went down in LA too.  Wr aren’t as good as a whole lot of homers think we are. Shore up the trenches.    I think too many fans buy into it because they are so starved for anything that looks like a winner.
    • How exactly does one win OROY "by default"? Wouldn't winning the award mean that of the two, McMillon stayed strong the entire year while the other guy didn't and fizzled out? That's like saying Secretariat only won by default because the other horse stopped moving midway through the race. Absolutely zero logic in that statement, which makes me very glad that I've never really paid much attention to Walterfoozball.
    • I agree, teams in the past have fired the HC in order to retain a coach on staff...hell it happened to Mcderp this year, rams in the past and Im missing another.  The fall off for the Panthers team defense was huge once Mcderp leftd and Ron could not fix it even when he named himself DC.
