john just used mitch to extend his shelf life a few yearsand get a few extra million before retiring. its not likely he'll get a 4th HC job with zero rings to show for it.

Fox isn't the GM

Trade up one spot to get a guy that woulda been there anyway...

No necessarily.

The bears most likely moved up with SF because they got word that someone was about to jump them with SF to get Mitch. There is no other logical reason why he would just go "hey I'll give you two extra picks if you switch so I can say I drafted him at #2 instead of #3"

In my personal opinion this reeks of Hurney/Fox move. Fox was on his way out, had his QB in Delhomme(Mike Glennon). The franchise has had terrible success lately (Panthers in 2010), and needed something to make the fans happy, and have some kind of hope. Hence the trade up and draft Mitch (Clausen).

Fox won't play Mitch unless it's the last thing he has to do. He isn't his type of QB, and Fox isn't there to help build the franchise to be successful in 5 years.

If they're committed to not getting impatient, it could wind up ok, likely in a post-Fox era. For example, the Rams were pressured into Goff but they stepped into that themselves picking him #1.
A QB is either ready or not...but there are the occasions where it takes some time.  Mitch strikes me like a solid mid-tier.  Below a Matt Ryan...in a Tannehill type realm.
I think Pace is on some opioids.

And Cleveland was pressured into the Garrett pick, the last quality QB they've had is sitting on our bench.

For people who aren't UNC fans and didn't watch his every snap, it's hard to understand. He isn't a start week one type of QB,  but he is the elite "prospect" QB of this draft. Think of prospect from an NHL or MLB perspective. Sit him on the bench and watch him grow.

I am UNC fan and I have been shocked at his draft rise and shocked #2 pick!! Good for him.. But Dishawn was not picked before Dehomes??.. So its based on system fits?? but whatever crazy draft!!

whats your point? the HC still plays a big part in the draft process.

Maybe it wasn't so much Hurney all that time.  I like Trubisky but they gave up a ton to move up one spot only for SF to show that they weren't going to draft a QB anyway.

I don't know what type of talks Trubinsky had with The Bears prior to the draft. But, if I were a QB, that's the last place I'd want to go play with their history and current situation.

The Bears haven't had an elite QB  since Sid Luckman  played in the 1940's. That's crazy. Nobody has been ever to reel off several consecutive seasons of solid play since Jim McMahon in the 80's. And he was by no means considered one of the top 10 QB's from that decade.

That current team just isn't that talented. Their coach is defensive minded and isn't known for putting together stellar offense (the Peyton Manning Denver years don't count. We know who was running the offense during that time). I actually feel bad for the guy. He going to a bad team with all the pressure of being the 2nd guy taken in the draft.
