We can not afford to lose Star Lotulelei

Beason was coming off a major injury and he had prior experience at olb. Beason, Davis, and Kuechly were both starters to begin the 2012 season (Kuechly at olb), but injury to Beason moved Kuechly to mlb. Kuechly was always guaranteed to be a starter somewhere at LB. Butler won't start unless there's an injury or Star isn't re-signed.

Why add depth to DT in round 1 when we had glaring holes to fill? We could have selected a DT later in the draft.

Yeah I know, and had Kuechly started at MLB he'd broken Patrick Willis's rookie record for tackles. You're forgetting we had Anderson too, who was playing at a top level, with Davis and Beason. I know there was concern about health for both but baring injury Carolina looked good at LB. And instead of reaching to fill gaps, landed a stud. They took the same approach selecting Butler, and like I said they use a rotation. So although he doesn't have a starter status he will see snaps, and in return the defensive line stays fresh and strong throughout the game.

ThVernon Butler pick still disappoints me. What a waste of a pick.

You will see the pick pay off this season that's for sure. What some people don't realize is that what if we would've lost Star or KK last season who was going to replace them? Adding Big Vern gave us flexibility in negotiations and if a big injury happens on the line. The sky is the limit for Big Vern this season.

Not saying he won't be a solid player but selecting Butler in round 1 when we already have KK is foolish.

At the time we picked Butler, keeping KK was very much in doubt. Picking Vernon was part insurance in the event we lost KK this year and a push to KK to sign since we had his replacement already.

I'm 90% sure we won't extend Star. I have a friend who played for the Panthers and is friends with Hurney. If Hurney shares the opinion of my friend we won't be extending Star. Right or wrong (the opinion) I have a feeling we extend Norwell, Davis and Olsen and Star is the odd man out.

The only extensions that make sense at this time are Star and Norwell.  Too bad DG knew this, but JR and Hurney don't.

You don't know this for certain. Apparently, Gettleman was working on a deal for TD, so it's very possible TD could've gotten an extension. So, it looks like Gettleman was going to extend Star, Norwell, TD, and Turner. According to you, that doesn't make sense. We also don't even know for certain if he had any plans of resigning Star or Norwell.

You extend rising/younger players before aging/slowing players who still have time on their deals.  I'm sure that DG was working on a deal for TD....he was likely told to do so from the top.

And no, when it comes to "football moves", touching Greg's this year makes no sense, unless we didn't have players that needed signing...but we do.

We give all of these players extensions....and in 2 years, things will be absurdly tight again, right in the middle of us starting to extend Cam again.

    • Why not? Dude was tough as nails. Came off the field after a vicious hit and showed the coach how his ring finger was knocked out of socket halfway up. You could see the shock on Fox's face. Brad just  pulled  on the finger, grimaced, got it back in alignment and went back in for the next play and blew up an opposing linebacker or two. Dude is legendary.
    • Motown let on like he'd like to play at least another 5 years in his presser. I fell he was truthful and us fans over did his knee. The guy started like 108 starts in a row and only missed like 2 games over each of the past years.  I think as long as the team agrees with his value that Motown has, he will sign another contract extension to push the void years into the 2030s.  OLmen can play at high levels up til 40. Trent williams is doing it, Richie Incognito leftd and came back to play until he hit 38. Lane Johnson is still playing at a top level while 38. You member Greg Van Roten, he's somehow still playing at 36 and he started here after being a substitute teacher years before. If you are able to get over the 32 year bump, its possible to reach 38 with luck. Colleges do a poor job of preparing new OLmen, many times that vet is better.   Rams were begging Andrew Whitworth to come back while he was 39, if you got the genes, luck and still willing to put in the hard work....it is possible to play until 38 as a OLmen*starting level*
    • Shaq was a fantastic LB, he just happened to have been standing in the shadow of a Panthers great and a Hall of Famer. He was team-lead starter quality for all 32 teams of the NFL. Don't throw shade on him, he was never just a guy.
