Wide receivers camp preview, who is in and who is out?

Nice write up Jeremy.

Any thoughts on what the team - and especially Hurney - might particularly value in a WR5?

  • Is it ability to come in and fill in for any injured guy (ala Bersin)?
  • Or is it special teams value, eg. speed in returns (ala Byrd)?
  • Or would it be most upside (maybe favoring a rookie like Duke)?
  • Or some other quality.... being a local?  (Bersin, Byrd, Duke)

I wasn't following the team so closely in the Hurney era.  I truly started my Panthers obsession in late 2012...  So I'm curious about what Marty might prioritize.

My current bets are with Bersin & Byrd or Duke.  Given how few snaps a WR5 plays (barring injury to one of the other guys), I'm guessing most important qualities are plug & play reliability (Bersin) should someone go down and special teams value.

I know Bersin's been dealing with an injury or coming off surgery (forget which) that limited him in OTAs.  It will be interesting to see his place in the pecking order come camp... but for a lot of reasons he still makes sense as depth, IF he still shows good hands and good routes.  This could especially be true this year if we've got guys like CMC, Samuel & Shepard as weapons in our return game.  We wouldn't need to count on our WR5 being our returner...

I think we only keep 5 WR with essentially having CMC as a hybrid we don't need to carry as many. I hate to be the one that says this, but ask me after some preseason practices and games!

As of today my hope would be a Charles Johnson or Garrett balls out. The reasoning is that to be honest both KB & Funch, our large WRs, have been very inconsistent. If one of those 2 guys can step it up that would be great for our team.

I think Ross/Duke will be practice squad this year but once again actually seeing these guys in game will definitely change my mind!

Russell Shepard isn't small.

    • Winning games and be a +500 team are good. But the goal is to win Super Bowl.  Chiefs had Alex Smith, went to playoff twice and still replaced him.   BY as of now: - To many fumbles - Completion in the intermediate range is just far below acceptable - Not enough of a deep throw threat....   The stats you try use is deceiving.  Catchable......  That is an opinion. Show me the completion %. And also, how does BY compare to other QBs using the stats you cited. Oh... ranked at 27
    • Your intelligence is artificial.
    • The Entitlement Paradox: When Winning Isn't Enough for Panther fans.    Just the other season(s) we were praying for wins by any means. Brought in every run of the mill QB you could think of.  We know all sides of the ball was bad like egregious bad. However some how we have won 5 games and TOXIC ENTITLEMENT has emerged.    We are a team that has to take wins by anymeans nothing has changed. Keep pounding means it aint gonna be perfect!!    Some panther fans have now developed a toxic entitlement where even victories feel insufficient, demanding flawless performance, or perfection, which stems from historical success in which we dont have any lol. This mindset poisons communities by fostering relentless criticism, harassment, and ingratitude that undermine team morale and alienate casual supporters. For the new Carolina Panthers, this could manifest as fans booing Bryce Young after gritty wins for low passing yards despite low turnovers, pressuring tepper into premature changes mid-rebuild, or driving away talent through online abuse!! eroding the positive momentum from their recent 4-game streak has brought us. Trust and believe the players do see your toxicity.    Anyways here are some positive stats.      Most Accurate QB on... 20+ Yard Throws 1. Drake Maye (79.2%) 2. Sam Darnold (79.2%) 3. Bryce Young (75.0%) 10-19 Yard Throws 1. Jaxson Dart (88.0%) 2. Jayden Daniels (82.9%) 3. Drake Maye (80.7%) 0-9 Yard Throws 1. Drake Maye (92.9%) 2. Spencer Rattler (92.6%) 3. Bryce Young (91.7%) @FantasyPtsData
