In all fairness, I have a love fest with Byrd too. #SpursUp but if I'm being objective, Duke is doing better and is earning the spot at the moment

I have no affiliation with USC other than being an App State fan and seeing Elliot go down and open up the running game for Spurrier for a few years. Based on what I've seen from Duke, he seems more precise than Byrd in his route running.

JMO, but from what is being reported from practices each day, considering Hurney is now the acting GM, and my own intuition, this is how I see it:

Jeremy's top list is correct, AS OF NOW.  But, I have a feeling that Funchess is NOT a lock to make this team and may slide out of that group and end up fighting for a roster spot.

As for who is currently on the bottom list and have a chance of working their way up to make the 53?  IMO, it is Byrd, Duke, and Clay, in that order.  I think Duke has a chance to overtake Byrd, but Rivera favors known, familiar faces and gives weight to guys who have already put in the work with him previously.  Byrd was elevated to the active roster last season where he even saw live-game action and looked good in his brief appearances.  So, that currently gives him the edge.  But, as I said, if Duke keeps doing what he's been doing, he may steal that last spot...  OR both Byrd and Duke make it if Funchess falls out of favor with Rivera/Hurney.

I didn't mention Bersin becuase he is redundant.  Maybe they cut him and make him honorary GM or something LOL...  wish I was joking.

Honestly, this is what I'm hoping for. Didn't want G-man fired, especially given the timing, but if there's any silver lining behind a GM change, maybe it's putting a little heat under Funchess' seat. He got by two seasons on virtually nothing but former draft position. Time to earn your keep. If the coaches think he hasn't been used properly, get it figured out and do it quick and let him show something. If not...

Funchess will definitely make the team, GM change or not. Aside from Benji, Funchess is the only receiver on our roster who has considerable in game experience in our system. Ginn and Philly are gone. In all of Bersin's time, his game experience likely doesn't equate to a full season. Byrd has a single game, with only a few snaps. Shepard barely got time at receiver with Tampa Bay, and has absolutely none in our system yet. All the rest are rookies.

Just saying,  with the GM that traded up and drafted him now gone, the acting GM has no real incentive to give him any more chances than he's already gotten to succeed.  In fact, Hurney would be more likely to cut him to make a statement unless he really shows out and earns his spot, which he hasn't to this point in his career.

Funchess deserves this year to prove himself. Hurney better not let him go just to spite Gettleman.
