im here to build the narrative elite qbs make mistakes too ft. Tom Brady

Gee. After week 3 we literally have people coming on here talking about benching Cam/trading/getting his replacement next year. Like I've never seen such an overreaction in my life.

I get it. He was bad last Sunday. A blind squirrel could tell he was bad. However, this board acts like he's some sort of bust out of Notre Dame and cannot conceive the idea other QBs also looked bad.

So, I go finagle a bit and watch the Patriots V Texans game. On paper, Tom Brady shredded the Texans, throwing for 378 yards and 5 touchdowns. Looking on those stats alone, you'd think Tom Brady's some unstoppable juggernaut who can do no wrong.

Well, numbers don't tell the whole story.

Sure, Tom Brady was good for most of the game. You don't make 4th quarter comebacks by accident. His final two throws are probably some of the best I've ever seen from him.

However, he also made a lot of mistakes. He should've been intercepted at least three times, threw lots of duds from a clean pocket w/ wide open receivers, and has himself to blame for 2 sack fumbles and a sack.

In fact, they could've been blown out if it weren't for luck.

To add on, 2/5 TDs he threw were to a wide open receiver. Gameplan was very good against the Texans.

So, yeah. I'm just here to build the narrative that other elite QBs also make mistakes and get lucky at times to make other homers like me feel better about themselves.

Tom Brady - Shoulda Been Intercepted's.

From just skim watching the game, I counted three instances where Brady should've been intercepted. There probably are more, but I'm just pointing out the obvious ones.

First one comes from his very first drive. Take a look below.

Yeah. Even on the game view I could tell this should've been an interception. Tom Brady makes a bad read here on his first drive at the goal line and throws a bad one that should've been intercepted.

Patriots get a huge ol' break. Tom Brady's throw was bad and almost led to a pick his first drive. Lucky for him, that didn't happen.

And then another one:

As the caption says, Texans call up a robber. Tom Brady has no recognition of said robber, and throws the ball.

9 times out of 10, this is an interception. The robber had easy ground to get to the receiver, get in front, and make a bee-line for the pick 6. Instead, the robber hesitates and misses the chance for the easy points.

A bad decision that could've resulted in an interception. Oh, and finally...

Tom Brady overthrows and lets the ball sail right into the DB's hands. First off, clearly the throw wasn't smart, as the Texan didn't have to exert too much effort to go for the ball. Secondly, the DB drops what should've been the game-ender.

So, Tom Brady should've been intercepted three times last Sunday at the least. Most of these throws were from clean pockets. Just bad decisions from Tom Brady.

Inaccurate, Eh?

Yeah Tom Brady also missed quite a bit of throws. Overthrowing, underthrowing, or just wide away, he had a few where he didn't look his best.

I'll start off with this one.

Tom Brady has a very clean pocket and throws downfield. His WR was open for the 20 yard play. However, TB underthrows and gives his receiver no chance to make the play.

Now, another one.

Yes this play happened right after the above one. Once again, Tom Brady has a clean pocket to throw from with Amendola wide open down the middle.

Guess what happens?

He misses it.

So yes. Lots more examples, but too lazy to go through them all

Just understand even the GOAT makes mistakes.

Pocket Presence

It was funny watching the game how many times tom brady fumbled the ball. Sometimes his own guys recovered, sometimes they weren't as lucky.

By my very quick count, I'd say one sack and two strip sacks are on him.

On this one, TB gets pressure from the left side. His focus shifts to avoiding said pressure and misses Hogan coming wide open. Brady should've thrown to his open receiver, but doesn't.

On another play, Tom Brady gets stripped.

Yeah. Tom Brady was looking to throw deep on this play. Basically doing what Cam does. Doesn't come open and faces the sack fumble.

Finally, another time he got stripped.

Offensive line breaks down, but Tom Brady doesn't help matters. Does evade initially, but then seems to completely forget he has a defender inches away and makes a poor decision to try to throw from that position.

Result was a strip, though I believe Patriots recover.

Conclusion

Both Tom Brady and Cam Newton are good QBs. Both make mistakes, some more obvious than others. Some get lucky, and some don't.

So yes, please keep this in mind. Elite QBs are fallible and not perfect. Don't count Cam out yet.

Look, to compare Cam's season to date to Brady's in any serious way is ridiculous, blind homerism.  If the point of this post really is just "look, Tom Brady made a couple mistakes, nobody is perfect" that is fine... but Cam doesn't look good on the field, and he is missing people wide open even when there isn't pressure, and rarely making plays.  I don't see the point in such a comparison.

Does Brady make mistakes? Yes.

Cam unquestionably looks worse this year than in years/games where he has been healthy.  He is missing gimmes and making poor choices.  He still gives us the best chance to win and benching him is only a good idea if he is injured/not completely healed.

But pointing out some mistakes Tom made in a game he won while throwing 5 TDs in a season where he has already thrown for more than 1k yards and has a >64% completion percentage to try to make it seem like Cam is playing just fine is ridiculous.

As to the overreaction - I was gone most of the last season, but hell, it wouldn't be a day on the Huddle without someone thinking we should start Anderson over Cam.  There are plenty of people that still aren't comfortable with him being our quarterback for some reason, regardless of how he plays.  The only reason I would want him to sit is for his own health.  I think I am in the majority on this board, too.

@mav1234 yeah im just talking about that one game.

that's fair - it seemed in a previous thread you were expanding a bit more than that.  Nobody is perfect.  Cam is still our best chance to win and a good player, I just haven't seen him look 'right' most of the time this season.

Nailed it. Completely fair criticism.

Brady makes plenty of mistakes.  He's thrown his share of interceptions.  He basically handed the falcons a TD in the super bowl on a poor decision in a situation where you can't make a mistake like that.

The difference is he plays in a great system.  He has an incredible coaching staff.  When you have an intelligent gameplan, a smart coaching staff who reacts and adjusts to your opponents, you tend to appear lucky from time to time.

When you have a moron running the show, who will put you on the bench for not wearing a tie, then throw you to the wolves when your shoulder is about to fall off in a meaningless situation, can't manage a game, and can't adjust or gameplan to save his life, you tend to appear very, very unlucky.

Neat, OP ... except Cam's not "elite".

Bingo --  "Elite QBs are fallible and not perfect" + Cam is fallible and not perfect =/= Cam is an elite QB.

OP is equivocating, but his lengthy post is structured so he can reply that he made no claims of eliteness, even though every sentence is dripping with that very implication.

yeah. i'd say cam was elite and has shown that in his career in the past.

right now would i call him elite? far from it. he's made a lot of mistakes so far that are on him.

this post was just meant to show that yes, even elite qbs do make mistakes which are helped alleviated through luck and scheme.

i would never put cam on the same tier as Brady or Rodgers until he's as consistently good as those guys. but i wouldn't go out and say cam's never been elite, especially after near unanimously getting MVP in 2015.

    • Revisiting the Prediction thread from April 3--a full 3 weeks before the draft.  I thought this was interesting because I was just repeating rumors and infusing them with my comments.  We trust names like McShay--look how wrong he was! Green indicates the rumor came true in some form.  Red indicates that the rumor was wrong-- Rumor:  McShay just reported in his podcast that the "winds have shifted" about Shedeur Sanders.  He referenced back in October when Dad basically said, "If we tell you not to draft him, don't draft him" to Shedeur wearing a Browns hat. (Nobody thought this would happen in round 5 or with the Browns).  Recently, Deion has come out to announce that he is OK with wherever his son goes--while the intentions were good, he is still one-too-many voices in the process.  I think it was at the combine when Shedeur responded to a question, "Do you know who my dad is?"  while laughing.  He was asked about the Raiders during an interview, and Shedeur said, "I ain't going sixth..." (if he meant 'round' he was right--but he meant overall)  He was referencing living with criticism, etc. but continually referencing Dad may not be helping--but this shift in his and his father's approach to the draft suggests that they are not quite as confident, now that teams have signed free agents.  McShay suggests that Cam will go #1 to the Titans, but the Browns may not think Sanders (who some have a second round grade on--he has him at #19 overall) is worth the #2 pick, and that might lead to them taking the best player in the draft (Carter, but do not rule out Hunter).  Side Rumor:  There are rumblings that the Browns could land Cousins from the Falcons, giving them a starting QB and the #2 overall pick. The Giants just signed Russell Wilson and J. Winston. Daboll and Shoen may not be ready to put their jobs on the back of a developmental QB--so they take the best player on their board, Hunter (if the Browns take Carter).  New England probably drafts an OT, but they would like to trade back. Some mocks have them taking Jeanty--but I do not see Vrabel going RB with so many needs.   Side Rumor:  The Jets may want to move up for Hunter (if he is there) and the Pats may want to move back and take a T.  So if Hunter is on the board at #4, look for a NY-Boston trade. The Jags do not need a QB, but most mocks have them staying put and taking Mason Graham, DT Michigan.  Side Rumor:  The smart money has the Jags taking Mason Graham, but some think they are in love with TMac.  Others have TMac going to the Seahawks later. The Raiders are supposedly in love with RB Jeanty to go in Pete Carrol's offense. I see that as a likelihood. The Jets seem to like Fields and bringing in Sanders makes little sense, but it could not be ruled out.  The drama, however, after the Rodgers experiment, is not ideal.  Most NY area experts have the Jets taking Membou OT or Warren TE--always take the top OT over the top TE.  The Panthers are likely to have Walker on their board and should be fielding offers.  According to McShay, a team still needing a QB would be calling the Panthers to get ahead of the Saints.  McShay mentions that the Giants could be in play to move back up to grab Sanders, but I see Indianapolis as a more likely candidate, with Richardson and Daniel Jones as their QBs at the moment.  For the Colts to move up to 14 it would not require a huge investment in draft capital.  The Colts could send Carolina their first (14) and second (45) to Carolina for their first (8) and a fourth (111) and fifth (140). Side Rumor:  According to McShay, the folks at FanDuel give the over and under odds for Sanders being drafted at 7.5 to 8.5.  The Panthers pick 8th.  What does this mean?   First, Jon Snow will have to change his user name and I think Special Juan is required to report his status to us to be on this board.  Secondly, it means the Panthers could sit at #8 and take Walker or move back, where players like Warren, TMac, Mykel Williams, or a top S (Starks/Emmanwori), Golden, etc. would be in play.   In addition, getting pick #45 would land a player like Princely (Edge). (However, Princely was drafted in round 3--Scourton was the selection at pick 51--Princely went pick 77 in the third)
    • Never been that big a fan of Cole Spencer honestly but he's steadily risen up the ranks ever since he got here.
    • His dad dealt with a fair number of injuries in camp or early season.
