Analyzing Shula...

The folks on here who defend Shula like to harken back to 2015 (and yeah, I probably would too). For sure, that was a great year. Shula had something going, a lot of it dependent on the threat of Newton running.

But here's the thing: Every scheme, every approach, every nuance, every whatever new thing you bring to the table is going to get figured out. That's just the NFL. That's how it works.

What matters most is what you do after that great idea you had gets figured out.

If you're legitimately good, you adjust and come up with something else. If you're really good, you might have already anticipated what was going to happen and you're ready to counter it.

If you're not, and that one thing was all you had, then as soon as the rest of the league figures you out, you're done.

Neither Shula nor Rivera seems to get it, and I don't buy that they will anytime soon.

The head coach is in charge of hiring assistants. Left to his own devices, Rivera will hire another OC just like his current one (and probably from within his current staff).

This team needs a complete overhaul. GM and head coach both need to go. But sadly, even that won't be enough unless Richardson allows someone else to pick their replacements.

So essentially, don't hold your breath on things getting better.

it would make me feel better

There's a question that's rattled around in my mind.

If there were a power struggle between Cam Newton and Ron Rivera, who would win?

Cam would win just like Davis and Olsen did. I just don't think Cam is that type. Maybe I'm wrong.

also ive been banging the drum on shula for as long as anyone, but it's not like there's some offensive whiz kid sitting in the wings.

incompetent people don't give themselves reasons to look over their shoulder.

Which goes to the point that the change needs to be more than just Shula.

But again, if Marty Hurney is in charge of the head coaching search, it doesn't matter.

Speaking of which, I'm sure the search for a new GM will be getting started any time now.

    • From Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/nutshellsportz.bsky.social/post/3mo3rkrcezs2e  A look at Run Threat Rate across the NFL Run Threat Rate is the percentage of plays where a team either runs the ball or uses play action. This compares each team’s rate when leading or tied versus when trailing to show how much they abandon the run when playing from behind.
    • That's the current dilemma on both parties at the moment. If Ickey comes back too soon, he won't be 100% and his play will suffer. Leading to a potential decrease in his contract. If Ickey is unable to play and sits the entire 2026 season, his contract will still take the same hit since it tells all 32 team that he is not fully recovered. On the Panthers side, I'm sure they would want to keep Ickey if he is fully recovered but he is obviously in a contract year. They don't want to re-sign him to a massive deal since it be too risky and they know if Ickey is able to return to form.  Best case scenario, the Panthers wants to offer Ickey a 1-2 year heavily incentive based prove it deal. However, Ickey would most likely decline the offer and test the market as  another team can come in and offer Ickey a better deal if they are desperate enough for O-line help.
    • They have been giving him a lot of snaps at RT to give TMo some relief in camp. I think that will continue for the time being.
