The Fire Sale Theory

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

So a while back, I posted a question in the All Pro section that it's probably appropriate to discuss here as well.

The premise: Hurney is not going to be an "interim" GM. He's here to stay.

On the coaching front, you have Rivera, a guy who believes that any and all blame for lost games falls on the players.

So with those things in mind, a question:

Are we set up to see a "fire sale" this offseason, with Hurney and Rivera dumping players (in all probability, mostly Gettleman pickups) to reshape the roster in their own image?

I was only about 50% sold on the idea myself.

After today though...

Maybe at the bottom of the roster but for the most part No.

Infact, if it was left to Hurney, Tre Boston would still be our starting safety.

Kurt- safe

Adams- gone

Thompson - I could see this being a suprise Hurney move.

Star - maybe

Norwell- Safe

Williams- Safe

Matt Kalil - Gone after next season

Butler- Traded for 5th

Cb's - Safe

Etc ... maybe a couple moves.

We still have the same scouting department from when Hurney orginally left. The only time I really think he hit the "GM choice" was the '16 draft

Idunno, I'm still shocked we let KB go for basically a 3rd.  Wasn't the 7th, basically the same pick we gave them in the Clay-Seymour trade?

Also, I am still holding out hope that JR isn't dumb enough to let him get the full time gig..  but I wouldn't be suprised in the least.

Scouting department has actually seen its fair share of changes, biggest of which was likely the departure of Ryan Cowden.

Likewise, Don Gregory is no longer chief of college scouting, and Mark Koncz was fired shortly after being promoted from pro scouting.

    • Rico is 0%. I think we would really like to have Mays back but we have a value in mind and aren't willing to overspend. I think someone probably will so I think the odds are pretty low but not zero.
    • Damn I liked A'Shawn too. This is basically a heads up we're planning on cutting you move.  Robinson wasn't the best but I loved his attitude and effort on the field. He held that entire dline together when Brown went down iirc..granted we finished that season as the worst rushing defense in modern NFL history.  If Wharton would have performed up to atleast half of his salary last season, I'd feel a little better about it. We do need that cap space though.
    • 13. Carolina is coming. The Panthers are well thought of around the league. Their "process" seems sound. I think their off-season will be very interesting to keep an eye on. They made the playoffs, but they're not yet knocking on the door. (Offense was 26th in EPA/play.) I think it's imperative they don't overestimate where they are in their build. They can't throw a ton of money around in FA to "make a run now". They need to be intentional about building a solid foundation. (IMO) And from what I know about the team... I think they will be. Sidenote: I have my eye on offense there, not defense. They HAVE to leave next season with a strong opinion on Bryce Young. They need to put pieces around him to do that. Can't be left wondering what he would have looked like with "better OL play" or "more pass catchers". They have to know. (That part is purely my opinion. No one told me that.) https://x.com/lindsay_rhodes/status/2027212533417869499?s=46&t=xeIgh_-Vr2aKxBkBJdfnKA
