Are the Panthers Underachievers

absolutely.

do you remember the atmosphere in the NFL during/immediately following cam's rookie year? people were talking about cam like he was a surefire hall of famer.  we were one of the hottest up and coming franchises before we even drafted luke kuechly.

back then, if you would have told me we have 0 rings in 2018 i wouldn't have believed you.

are they underachieving?

yes. why? because they are ok with losing. it's a culture thing that i thought they drafted cam to help change, but they are turning into a fox team where they look at winning 3 out of every 4 games is a solid goal. sure, if you pull that off, you get a pretty respectable record, but how can it hurt you? look at what our record netted us this year...a wildcard spot playing in the superdome.

sorry....that's not good enough. the only thing that is good enough ever is winning that ring and coming short of that goal is failure and it should be taken hard and used to forge an identity that will only accept excellence. we have to be a team that will do whatever it takes to win and we're going to have to have leadership that has that mindset as well...and we don't.

we need an owner that is driven to bring a championship and will not settle for what we have settled for. we need to have a GM who is driven to put the best complementing team possible around cam and luke and who draws the line in the sand for the coaching staff saying "take this collection of players and give them what they need to win a ring." we need to have a head coach who demands excellence from his coaching staff and players and who is ruthless in his determination to win. we need an OC and a DC who can come up with a plan using the existing strengths and weaknesses on the team and put together a plan that can win TODAY with them and is willing to adapt mid stream what we want to do to what will work given what our players are able to do and what the other team is letting us do.

from top to bottom, we have to have a collection of people who have only one thing in mind...winning a damn ring. screw all this political crap that keeps popping it's head up. it's football. they are there for one reason...to win games. that's it. make it a singular focus for the team. you want more fans and more revenue? win. just win.

If we get the right owner I could see  us winning the bowl in 2019, 2020, or 2021 season . 2018 will be too soon , either will be cleaned house and wont gell in just 1 season , or Rivera/Shula get another shot, fail miserably, and THEN big changes occur.

Somehow I feel there will be a good chance when Cam is around 30, and then again when Cam is close to end of his career at 36-37. Teams tend to win in cycles, take multiple seasons to find the perfect groove , unless youre the Patriots ofc.

Generational, game-wrecking talent at QB and LB. Solid, experienced personnel on both sides of the line and at TE. Below-average corps at WR and secondary.

That's not the makeup of an automatic SB contender, but it is the makeup of a team that should be competitive in a wildcard game. Which we weren't.

So, sure, underachievers. Coaching was the difference between an honest shot at that game and a doomed effort that every single expert and non-expert knew would fail.

The single clearest indictment of this coaching staff comes at the position group I left out. If you can't get more out of Jonathan Stewart and Christian McCaffrey than out of Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram, you have failed, utterly.

@uncfan888 Tomas has a different approach to describing Cam Newton than his elite college coach father

Vets...stew was awful and we all screamed for cap...when he got his chance he couldn’t even take a pitch or handoff without fumbling....sigh

Thats just lack of playing time, nothing compares to in-game experience. I think with a lot more reps CAP would have been real useful this season.

yes and no

Given the franchise was blessed with Cam on one side and Luke on the other....both in their primes at the exact same time?  Yes the franhise is underachieving.

But the actual teams we have put on the field? I don't think they underachieve.   We tend to go into seasons with mind boggling voids and holes on rosters.  I mean that is healthy and going in.    I mean going into the past several seasons you can pretty much call the the issues this team will have and they play out accordingly.

I read cmc interview on his first season. He felt he did ok but needs to work on some things which he said he w do in offseason. He is quite adamant that he’s a rb and wants to be an every down back.

Yes of course they are.  I watched the games.  There is more than enough talented players on this team to succeed.  The philosophy and scheme stinks beyond measure.

maybe there are too many overachievers to compete.
