Next Year's Backup Quarterback

I've seen a couple of different articles that mention us drafting a QB, not only as a backup, but as Cam's future replacement. I mean, assume he'll play at least 6 or 7 more years. If we draft someone good enough to replace him, it doesn't seem likely that they'd still be on our roster by that time (though I know it's possible). Just seems like an odd take.

Would be nice to be like the pats for once and draft a backup that plays so well we can trade em every couple years and get another

The way Cam plays, you see him doing this at age 35?  I do not.  He will start declining around 31 or 32...When he loses the run option, he can't rely on his accuracy to beat teams.

They also need to plan for the possibility of not being able to re-sign Newton when his contract runs out.  Don't assume he will re-sign for another team friendly contact.  A backup plan should be one of their top priorities going forward.

Not unless the answer is Garrett Gilbert.

He's had his moments but is he ready to be a full time backup?  I'd be iffy on that idea.

I like what I've seen from Garrett Gilbert. I'm a fan. He has what Jake had (heart, balls)but better tools. I'd take a young Gilbert over DA having seen DA in his last outting and Gilbert in his. Good arm, mobile, has sat behind Cam and been in the QB room and has seen Cam put in work.

Would love to see what he does without DA. Let him run the show in camp and preseason. Kap ain't going anywhere, and maybe we'll get an owner with balls and Kap will realize that even without the controversy, he's only good enough to be a back up.

FWIW, I would love to bring in Bridgewater on a budget friendly deal. I feel that he and Bradford are the only 2 on the list that have a chance of not nose diving the team if, god-forbid, anything happens to Cam, but Bradford won't come cheap.

Bradford got a 20 million dollar deal with the Cardinals.

Bridgewater signed with the Jets to backup Josh McCown and potentially have a chance to start if McCown doesn't do well.

This is an old thread that someone recently bumped. A lot's happened since it was first written.

The truth is, we might as well go with Gilbert and let DA ride off into the sunset.

What we need is someone who can come in for a few plays for Cam and hold down the fort until he can get back on the field in a game. Gilbert can probably do that now with a couple of hand-offs and a dump-off pass.

Our entire offense revolves so much around Cam that if he misses more than a quarter of a game, then all bets are off when it comes to the playbook anyway. A long-term injury isn't going to be a Wentz and Foles situation or even a Smith and Kaepernick one from years back. You just can't replace Cam in our system. There are mobile QBs out there, there are gunslingers out there, but they just don't make gigantic, strong arm, laser cannon armed guys who can also be scat backs and bruising power running backs all at the same time.

It's best to stick with Gilbert for the time being and just make sure he is ready for his 15 minutes of fame should it happen. If it takes more than that, there isn't a guy out there who can fill those shoes well enough.

I would think any D1 college quarterback could come in and do that. Not much of a standard.

Does that analysis still hold with Turner in charge though?

It's true that Shula's system was heavily Newton dependent. Turner, on the other hand, has had success with multiple quarterbacks.

That we have a huge drop off in talent if Cam goes down is a given. But I'm not so sure the argument of our system being Newton dependent still holds with Shula gone.

Probably so, but at this point I wouldn't waste a draft pick on it and I sure wouldn't put the money in a "good, experienced" back-up QB would cost us. It's just my opinion we should stand pat at the moment.

It's really hard to say, isn't it? I've just got to go on what we do know. And that isn't much..

I hope Norv can work some magic here and open up the game for both our offense and us fans. He might see more in Gilbert than any of us do and who knows, he may just see that DA is still needed. We really won't have much of an idea until after the draft.

One does wonder, though, if a team out there might snag DA after the draft to help raise up a young QB.
