By my count, he's alienated the entire NFC South and is now extending his trolling campaign to further NFL precincts.

If you're keeping track, in the past five weeks Payton has:

  • Brandished the choke sign at Falcons running back Devonta Freeman.
  • Engaged in a bizarre midfield slap fight with Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter.
  • Broken out a broom in his post-game locker room to taunt the Panthers.
  • And mocked Minnesota Vikings fans from the sidelines with a Skol clap during the waning seconds of the Saints-Vikings playoff game on Sunday.

If Payton is on some kind of Make the Saints Hated Again campaign, he's accomplishing his mission.

I agree.  I've hated him ever since bounty-gate.  I respect the hell out of Brees, but I hate only

the Patriots more than the Saints, and 99% of it is because of Payton.  The Minnesota game was sweet

karmic justice.

Per this article from the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Yes, you read that right. This article comes from Saints beat writer Jeff Duncan.  Within it, Duncan calls out Payton for behaving badly, says he's a poor example to his players, points out that no other coach in the league acts like this and derisively calls him "Sideshow Sean".

Excerpts:

Quote

What a month it's been for Sean Payton.

By my count, he's alienated the entire NFC South and is now extending his trolling campaign to further NFL precincts.

If you're keeping track, in the past five weeks Payton has:

Brandished the choke sign at Falcons running back Devonta Freeman.
Engaged in a bizarre midfield slap fight with Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter.
Broken out a broom in his post-game locker room to taunt the Panthers.

And mocked Minnesota Vikings fans from the sidelines with a Skol clap during the waning seconds of the Saints-Vikings playoff game on Sunday.

If Payton is on some kind of Make the Saints Hated Again campaign, he's accomplishing his mission.

Quote

He has single-handedly turned the Saints, one of the most likable group of players you'd ever want to meet, into the NFL's most despised team this side of New England.

Panthers fans hate him.

Falcons fans detest him.

Bucs fans abhor him.

And now Vikings fans, a group so considerate they've donated more than $200,000 to Thomas Morstead's Foundation, can't stand him.

And I get it. There's nothing wrong with stirring the pot a little. I do it daily in my line of work. It's the only way to make a good roux.

And I could live with Payton's answer if this were an isolated incident. But it's not. There is a pattern of behavior here, and it's not a good look for Payton or the Saints.

Quote

Frankly, Payton is acting more like a professional wrestler than an NFL head coach. Heck, Brock Lesnar shows more competitive decorum than Sideshow Sean.

I can't think of another coach in the league that would give the choke sign to an opposing player during a game.

Can you envision Bill Belichick mocking the Who Dat chant at the end of a Saints-Patriots game, win or lose?
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton engaged in a bizarre post-game exchange with Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter after the teams' game last month in Tampa, Fla.

Quote

There's no doubt Payton's antics appeal to some Saints fans. When you've had sand kicked in your face for the better part of four decades, you crave the kind of audacity Payton brandishes, even if deep down inside you know it's over the top.

It's the old "He might be a you-know-what, but he's our you-know-what" principle.

Most Saints fans will tell you they wholeheartedly prefer the cocky Sean Payton to the sedated version we saw from 2014 to 2016.

But don't confuse causatives here. The Saints aren't good because of Payton's cockiness. Payton is cocky because the Saints are good. Historically, he's only acted this way when his team is talented enough to back it up.

In that regard, consider Sideshow Sean a harbinger of good things to come.

Quote

The only ones in the Saints organization capable of reigning him in are General Manager Mickey Loomis and Owner Tom Benson. And at this stage, I'm not sure they are capable or even motivated to curb his behavior. He is who he is. He can't help himself.

That said, I wonder how Payton would deal with it if one of his players or assistant coaches were caught doing the same thing? What if, say, the equipment manager were caught taunting the opposition and caused a viral incident in the news media?

Payton would can him on the spot. As the late great Hokie Gajan would say, "Here's a road map and an apple. Now, hit the road."

Like most coaches, Payton detests distractions. He goes to extraordinary lengths to avoid them. Unless, of course, he's the one creating them.

Payton often compares the coaching profession to teaching and parenting. And in many cases, the comparisons are apt. His players, assistants and staff look to him constantly for guidance and leadership.

But Sideshow Sean isn't a lesson anyone should follow.

Heh :)

Can you imagine our best writers being able to write things like this about the team? Their balls would be immediately cut off by the current owner

Wonder if that relationship changes with the next one.

I'd actually say given the current situation, beat writers can probably say anything they want to because Richardson pretty wel;l screwed himself, but on the other hand it's possible they may not want to alienate anyone with the sale still pending.

what was funny about the ted ginn thing was that his next career move would have probably involved holding a broom had the panthers not scooped him up.

Somehow I am unable to find solace in this after watching him and his new team beat us 3 times in 1 season while we trotted out practice squad wide receivers.

But keep on keepin' on I guess.

    • Technically speaking, Fields has been a better QB than Bryce Young in the NFL.  I mean it’s bottom rung comparing by BY isn’t better.  Thats what I don’t get about the talk this week.  We don’t have a QB edge
    • Might be different against a team with no legitimate pass catching options outside of their rookie TE though.  Their #1 WR tomorrow has 8 catches this season, next best WR receptions number this year is 4. If we can't defend that while Horn travels with their TE, then we have some serious problems.   Maybe we don't end up doing that in the end, but it's probably how I'd be scheming up the defense tomorrow when they have only 1 non RB pass catching option.
    • I fought sleep to stay awake just to watch that fumble on the goal line as we were going in for the go ahead score and said fug it, I'm going to bed. I've seen this movie before. I know how this ends. This bullshit of having California teams in conference with east coast teams is trash. That game probably didn't end until 2:30AM. Hell, it was 2AM at the time of the fumble and there was still 3+ minutes to play. In conference games being played into the 2AM hour for local audiences is terrible for the game. And the worst rule in football really does need fixed. Fumbling through the endzone or a fumble recovers by the D in the end zone should not result in a touch back and the ball on the 20. Fumbling through the endzone should not be a turnover. Fumbling out of bounds isn't a turnover anywhere else on the field. That should be the offense's ball on the one yard line. If the D recovers it in the endzone it should be the D's ball on the one yard line. Everyone knows this and everyone talks about it so just fix it already. If Cal was getting the ball at the goal line instead of out to the 20 I would've kept watching. That's a completely different scenario than the ball at the 20.
