GM Candidate Profiles

And yeah, Raye is clearly the best candidate on the list and a serious upgrade from Marty Hurney.  An ideal situation would be taking Raye as GM and Cowden as his assistant but obviously that's not likely.

As a Panther fan, that would excite me (sexually) but I'm really being cautious about this so-called "GM search".

I have a feeling I'm going to wake up one day this week to the news that the Panthers have named Marty Hurney full-time GM.

Eh, it's what I do.

I wish I felt more like it meant something this time.

Whether or not it means something you make the Huddle a better place.

Thanks for pulling this together and taking the time to educate us all a little more.

Appeeciated but I wouldn't say it's that much. Just doing some research so I know who's in play and sharing it with others.

I have this gut feeling that this is just a sideshow.   We are approaching the biggest time of the year for a GM why in the world would you make a change now.

It will be Hurney.

If he doesn't bury us in CAP HELL again, we might just be OK.

His interim title is valid through June this year. Having interviews this early doesn't sit well with me.

Speculation was that the Fritz Pollard alliance got tired of the Panthers just sitting on the "interim" tag.  They may have felt like Jerry Richardson (who, remember, was accused of using a racial slur on an African American scout) was keeping Hurney in that status to avoid interviewing anybody else, especially minority options.

There's reason to believe they could be right.  Remember Hurney actually did the job for several years with no official contract (where else have you ever heard of that happening?) And Darin Gantt said many times before that Hurney was basically "GM for life" if he wanted to be before the events that led to his ouster.

A bit of odd info has come out related to that as well.  I remember reading it but can't find the link.  Discussed it in All Pro but probably won't post it here until I can find the story again.

I guess the question is whether you believe Jerry Richardson would do something like that.

Of course, while you're pondering that, you can also mull over whether he'd ask a girl if he could shave her legs.

Great work on the coaching/front office profiles as always.  The GM has always felt like Hurney's job though.  There's the timing of starting the search, the fact that Hurney hired Rivera in the first place and the uncertainty with ownership of the team all lending to the fact that stability is likely what's going to win out.

Great write up as usual by Mr Scot.

and not to change the subject but

the people choosing the next GM aren't qualified to make the best football decision.  It feels more like a group handpicked to produce the result Jerry Richardson desires.

This is spot on and is also why I feel that JR already has a line of communication going with the new owner (s) - its a mere formality at this point to let the NFL give him their blessing and announce it to the public.

The people making the decision...

COO Tina Becker: no experience in football personnel evaluation whatsoever; basically Jerry Richardson's surrogate; will no doubt choose whomever Richardson wants her to

Team Spokesman Steven Drummond:  again, not a football person; Drummond is a PR guy; who the hell puts a PR guy in charge of making important football decis...oh, wait

Associate General Counsel Steve Argeris: a lawyer, great; probably one of the guys who helped Richardson craft his non-disclosure agreements

Head Coach Ron Rivera: the only actual football person in the bunch; also the same guy who hired Mike Shula; Rivera has already stated publicly that he'd like to see Marty Hurney keep the job; Rivera obviously knows and likes Marty, but is also acquainted with both Ryan Cowden and Jimmy Raye; I'd like to think he's better then to be part of just screwing them over, but it doesn't appear true; he's also been fiercely loyal to Jerry Richardson even in the midst of the scandal, so...

Basically, this decision is being made by four puppets of Jerry Richardson.

So yeah, we're screwed.

As it turns out, Cowden might not actually be interviewed.

Person that indicated that the Panthers won't bother to make Hurney sit down for the formality of an interview.

If they're not going to bother to interview Cowden, then it would seem obvious that the Panthers are just doubling up on Rooney Rule interviews to cover their asses.

(and effectively spitting in the faces of Raye and Dawson)

    • Two things: 1. Dr. Eric Eager is central to the draft process 2. I know that it was edited, but we didn't hear "Thieneman" one time, not even before the Vikings pick.
    • Why would he sign here as a guard when surely someone would sign him as a tackle?  Assuming he is healthy
    • Went back to watching the highlights. With a sober mind haha. Here is what I saw.    freddie needs to make 1 of those but the rest aren’t on him.    Slavin was BBBBAAAD again last night. Not sure what is going on with these game one Slavin gafs.    miller was ok but had his worst game in the playoffs so far.    nikishin was no good. His his awful turnover led to the first goal at the end of the first period that just can’t happen. ghost was beat like a drum multiple times last night, including the go-ahead goal at the end jarivs wont shoot. He is either hurt or he is struggling mentally and I think it could be a combination of both. He passed up a wide open net on the power-play only to pass it to no one and cleared it himself.     Svech played well. He is getting zero help on that line.    aho. Worst game as a pro. I mean that. He won’t shoot it, passes go to no one and turns it over repeatedly.  He did exactly what they did against Montreal game one when Miller had a turnover. Aho left his man to go help and left the golden Knight player wide open in front of Freddie.  If I was Rod, you Tell Aho when that thing hits your stick you fire it  someone needs to sit him down just him in a room and ask what’s going on. He seems soft, timid and has zero fire.   canes could have won that game   There isn’t a gap between these two teams  they are dead even   Carter Hart’s gonna get lit up in this series. We can beat that guy. the consensus last night was our defense played horrible and our stars won’t score.  clean the defense up. Tell the top line to shoot it everything and we’ll win tomorrow night.   Possibly convincingly.
