Rumor: McDaniels may turn down the Colts

This could get weird...

The Colts think they’ll be getting a new head coach after Super Bowl LII. And while they may ultimately land Josh McDaniels, there’s some reason for concern.

PFT has heard increasing chatter throughout the day that McDaniels may decide not to leave New England.

As reported during the Super Bowl pregame show on NBC, McDaniels has not yet told the Patriots he’s leaving. If he ultimately stays, McDaniels could make it very difficult for himself to get another head-coaching job, especially via the unofficial wink-nod postseason interview process, in which deals aren’t really done but as a practical matter are supposedly done. Who would trust him the next time, if he stiff-arms the Colts this time?

Chatter increasing that McDaniels may stiffarm the Colts

This would be a pretty douchey move on McDaniels part.  It'd put the Colts back at square one since I'm pretty sure all their other candidates either pulled out or got other jobs. That, plus they've already hired a couple of assistants at McDaniels' request.

Believe it or not, some of the speculation about this revolves around hints that Belichick could retire and hand the Patriots to McDaniels (personally, not buying it).

I can’t stand the Colts so I’m good with this. A lot of Colt fans I know said they are surprised he would come here with Luck being a huge question mark. If you think about it, besides Luck, why would you go there? Especially, if Luck may have to have another surgery like reported earlier on Sunday. Some doctors are saying he needs corrective surgery, some are saying he’s fine. It’s not like this would be McDaniels first HC gig, if it was I would understand. He may just want to be an OC.

Didnt Belicheat do the same thing to the Jets ?

Not really, but kind of, and it will be similar if he ends up leaving.

Belichick was the heir apparent to Parcells with the Jets and everyone knew it. They had a contract in place to where he would become defacto HC if and when Parcells retired. Parcells was waivering on whether or not to retire and taking his time. Then the Pats fired Carroll and wanted to give Belichick an interview. They sent a fax to the jets and Parcells called an emergency meeting and announced his retirement on the spot surprising a lot of people. This essentially blocked Belichick from getting an interview with NE and being able to build up his own legacy on his own. There was much butthurt.

Then during the press conference where they were announcing Belichick as the HC, he resigned on the spot. Belichick says this was mainly due to the fact that the owner of the jets had passed away and new ownership was taking over so he wasn't really sure of the direction the franchise was headed.

Then he created a dynasty and is probably the GOAT coach in NFL history.

Source: just watched the two bills ESPN 30 for 30 the other day. Great watch if you're a football fan, would recommend.

Knowing the Colts they probably just assumed McDaniels wanted to be there HC.

No, they actually had an agreement. In fact, the Colts have already hired a couple of assistants that he picked. But they wouldn't have been able to sign him to an official contract until after the Super Bowl

Kind of a douchebag move to the guys that already changed jobs to be on his staff if McDaniels doesn't take the job.

Not a fan of either the Colts or McDaniels, but if I had a chance to be the HC of the Patriots, I wouldn't be heading to Indianapolis.  Difference between the two team owners is night and day.

I'd say the difference between the two team owners is rum and coke.

Lol it's the Patriots. And were talking about a guy who traded Cutler for Orton.

    • WR: Nico, Woods, Tank (R) TE: Schultz OL: Tunsil/Howard/Deiter/Mason/Fant vs. WR: Chark, Thielen, Mingo (R) TE: Hurst OL: Icky/Zavala (R)/Bozeman/Jensen (R)/Moton   Panthers' had the better OL before losing BC week 1 and AC week 4 which is kind of ironic considering how in the following year DB went down in W1 and Shaq in W4 resulting in the defense going all to Hell. CJ has done amazing in Houston, but he also wasn't asked to carry Zavala, Jensen, Mingo, Hurst, and Chark as a rookie.
    • Past 5 seasons, IMO CJ Stroud and Joe Burrow are the 2 best young QBs that have emerged in the league in that window.  They also didn’t need vets to be their primary pass catchers.  They helped fellow youngsters be great at WR.   almost all the other young QBs have been paired up with vets in their top options….and haven’t been as promising.  so it isn’t Madden.  But the league hasn’t played out as you suggest it does.   Good QBs make others around them better.
    • In 2023 their roster wasn’t stacked. They nailed the poo out of the 2023 draft and since they knew Davis Mills wasn’t the guy, they tanked properly to get pick 2. They also took Cleveland’s ridiculous offer for Watson unlike us with Burns. Houston received enough draft capital to jump up to 3 while picking up the right guys in Anderson and Stroud. The Texans were not stacked or better than us in 2023. They had 11 total wins from 2020 to 2022. They didn’t have a terrible front office so they made sure they got their QB of the future while tanking well and getting more draft picks. They are a textbook study of what we should have done in 2022/2023 offseason even though people in here still think tanking is a bad word and our culture would be bad if we were the Texans. We literally had the chance to be the Texans right now and fuged it up.
