A chance that Norwell stays?

Voth has previously shot down any suggestions of tagging Norwell.

If we do indeed keep him, I don't think that's going to be how it happens.

Any way we go, we're talking about a lot of money tied up in our guards.

Not a bad thing when there the best in the NFL.

I agree, to an extent.  But our run game has been bad since 15...now maybe it was totally on scheme and predictability, but again...lot of money going to "run blocking" O linemen, when our run game has been awful.

Stew has been a shadow of himself for awhile now. His burst has been gone. CMC took awhile to get acclimated to the NFL game. We need a new power back to pair with CMC.

Yeah, I don't think Star wants to be here. I don't think he wants to be on the east coast period. He doesn't strike me as a guy who is all about the money and that's it. He'd probably take less money to be closer to family. It is what it is.

There's a reason he lives in Utah. He's good as gone but this is a good year to pick up a nose tackle.

Also, I know fans have assumed that Matsko's "running game coordinator" or whatever it is was just a promotion in title only and that his actual coaching job remains virtually the same, but our OL play in general and running game in particular have not looked as good since that promotion in title. Now, maybe that's just coincidence, I don't know.

Kalil, TD  are retiring after this season & if you cut other old vets like: CJ , J-Stew, Adams, Dickson, Jones etc you will free up plenty of CAP space.

Didnt even think about Dickson, Jones. Those guys can easily be replaced anyway with cheap vets or rookies. I wouldnt hesitate to cut those guys to keep the best guard in the league.

Maybe it is possible now that Kalil has said for sure he is retiring for next year

I said that we needed to cut Kalil to make room for Norwell.  Go with the youth thats a stud vs a old guy thats about to retire and missed 50% of the games the last 2 seasons.

With Kalil for sure gone after this year, maybe they can go light on year 1 of a norwell extension with Kalil still on the books.  Then a littler heavier then next 2 with Kalil off the books

Hate lose Kalil but we do have some guys who can play inside...

Voth still sounds uncertain, but...

Reading the Tweet he's responding to, it sounds like the formula might include cutting Ryan Kalil and rolling with Tyler Larsen.

And keep in mind, we're still talking about paying Norwell a boatload of money.

That makes sense.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Ryan take one for the team and take a significant pay cut so we have a much better shot of going out on top this year, with keeping Norwell.

Norwell is the exact prototypical elite NFL player you just don't let walk. No matter how much you already have invested in the other G spot. I hope to god we can see this and keep Norwell. Protect your QB and keep elite (on the field and off) players.

Right.  Kalil stays averaging 7 games per season over the last 2 years and we let a feared LG walk off?  No way.  That would leave us, for half the season, with Larsen, Silatolu, and Matt Kalil on the left side.  AAAH..Cut must be significant with no extension.

You didn't think of Dickson because he is a free agent and we can't cut him.

I don't know that we could find any vet to replace Adams, at least not for any cheaper than he is currently playing for,  but I'd be all for bringing in a stud safety in the draft.

Norwell tag would be silly... Will likely be $15M for a season. Top guard money is about $10-12M/year. That's a 25% to 50% increase for the tag for one year. If we keep him it's gotta be a long term deal locking him in here for the long haul.

I thought the FT was simply the average of the top 5 at that position.

Cuts -

Ryan Kalil - saves $7,500,000. Aging, injured, and just not worth that pay day.
Jonathan Stewart - saves $3,750,000. See above.
Russell Shepard - saves $2,150,000. Not reliable. The only plays I remember from him outside his week 1 touchdown were bad plays.
Charles Johnson - saves $3,500,000. Thank you for your time, but no where near worth this money, and I do not even want to see him take a paycut. Right now he is worthless on the field.
Wes Horton - saves $1,200,000. We will look to FA/Draft for more DE.
Fozzy Whittaker - saves $1,150,000. Just not worth the $. Can find 100s of guys just like him.
Kevon Seymour - saves $630,000. I mentioned him and Sanchez of the lesser guys because it is time to move on.
Zack Sanchez - saves $555,000. See above.
Maybe cut a few others, but this brings our cap to $39,395,591.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
