The Panther's Secondary*

Bradberry / Cockrell / Seymour / Gunther - Outside

Munnerlyn / Elder / Cole - Nickel Backs

Jones / Southward - Free

Adams / Searcy - Strong

When you look at things we're not too bad off, the competition at depth is going to be intense, as I think it's pretty safe to bet the number two spot, and potentially Bradberry's place at number one may very well be up for grabs.

While I think it's foolish to think Bradberry won't be the lead defensive back as I personally think the scheme hurt our secondary the most, there's nothing wrong with operating training camp, and the rest of the off-season from that stand point. Seymour, and Gunther still intrigue, and I think their ceilings are higher than Worley's from a coverage stand-point as they both seem better suited to carry the vertical routes.

I think I may be most interested to see what Elder, and Cole do to push Munnerlyn, we all know he had his dissatisfaction with playing time last year, will be interesting to see how that battle plays out.

Safety is not horrible, if we're able to secure a solid rookie to man the free safety position, we could honestly be turning the corner in the secondary as a whole.

The following is not a bad group to roll out Week 1:

Bradberry / Cockrell / Munnerlyn

Rookie / Adams or Searcy

With the strength of our front seven bolstered with the addition of Poe, and the play we already get from core guys, i think there is definitely room to be ''cautiously optimistic'' at this juncture.

Its kinda sad we spent 4 picks in the past 2 drafts on the secondary, and this year we need at least 2 more. We need to hit on someone in this draft , preferably at saftey , but we could use a #1 CB too. Not sure if Bradberry is that after last year, we'll see.

We just have to be careful about not overdrafting CBs again . Our 2016 draft was historically horrible, Vernon Butler is an afterthought rotational DT depth on our roster , practically nobody from that draft turned out good besides Bradberry who had a rough year 2.

I agree.  After the Superbowl, Gettleman lost nearly the entire secondary including Norman and tried to patch it with late 2nd and 3rd round rookies.    It was a huge screw-up.   We still haven't recovered.   It is a tall order for any rookie cb to start in this division.     Meanwhile I keep waiting for Butler's breakout season.    He has yet to really impress.

LOL it's 2018 and we still haven't recovered from 2016....child please we still haven't recovered from several empty drafts from Hurneys first tenure here.

Here's a hint...Cam should be coming along with at least 2-3 other players from his draft class and yet....

The secondary as a whole took a step back last year. Bradberry regressed from a technique stand point and Worley gave up a lot of plays and a lot yards in penalties. Playing in the NFC South which is the best division in football you better be able to cover the #1 receivers. I think Bradberry is a high end #2 but we definitely need to draft a #1 CB in this deep class.

I’m going to make a prediction that Fitzpatrick, Ward, Jackson or Alexander (maybe 2 of the 4) will be there at 24. Hurney will have a chance to draft a very good DB...just a matter of if he pulls the trigger.

Consistently...OL and DL end up going way higher than people think they will and it forces DBs to the bottom. Guys like Wynn, McGlinchney, Brown, Williams are going to go in the 1st round. I don’t buy that the combines are gonna force them out of the 1st round. I also think that 8-10 DL will go in the first as well. So if 20 linemen go in the first (very possible)...4 QBs go...that leaves around 10 other guys as first round picks.

This isn't a Gettleman vs. Hurney issue. Yes, Hurney's last 2-3 drafts were overall terrible but so was Gettleman's effort of desperately spamming draft picks at CB after the Norman fiasco.

With the amount of CBs we have on the roster someone has to emerge as a good side kick to bradberry who i think is going to redeem himself to a degree.

SS seems to be a play by committee.  Im not too opposed to that at this point given the personel, it could work.

FS must be upgraded at this point.

Even with norv im still more concerned with the offense.

Do not need to be content with the cbs and safety’s we currently have, I still expect S and cb to be drafted in the first two rounds. The fact we keep throwing trash cbs and s in the secondary because one good season by Coleman and Mitchell or because we run a zone scheme, it has bit us in the ass every year. Especially not grabbing a s or cb in a the heavy db class last year besides our 5th rounder.

    • The thing I hate about strength of schedule is that NFL teams change so much over a year and past success or failure doesn't really dictate future success or failure
    • Considering you previously struggled to understand BTT despite it being explained in a video, write-up, and multiple replies, I get why this might be a little too complex for you. Happy to clarify again! Just let me know which part tripped you up this time. 😉
    • And, honestly, there's only so much you can attempt to do in the draft. And every draft pick is a roll of the dice. But that's where grabbing a ton of UDFAs, and targeting the best, makes a big difference. Sure, their individual chances of getting a hit here is less, but that shotgun pattern might just hit something.  Right now, we need bulk, partly to rebuild and partly to dilute the deep level of stank that has developed on this team in the last six years. If we're going to rebuild a culture built around culture, accountability and winning, then these UDFAs we bring in each season have to be the wash water that gets out that leftover dirt.  Canales seems to be a smart, culture-first, build up the good ones kind of guy. I like that and I hope he can keep it going here. But he was working against a locker room that had been taught to lose and taught to distrust or ignore coaches. He's got his work cut out for him, still. He does seem to have it moving in the right direction and that's something I was pretty amazed with by the end of last season.
