David Newton profiles Ben Navarro

Mr. Scot

I really hope Navarro is the new owner. It is odd though, he seems like the last guy who would be bidding to buy an NFL franchise. I've met him before without even realizing who he was. Just thought he was the typical laid back Charleston business man. Nice guy.

Just caught some of a radio segment by Darin Gantt. Will post a link and more info in a little bit (got something to take care of first).

Going off of what Gantt said, I think it's possible Richardson might sell the team to Navarro in part to spite the NFL.

I've thought about that.  Not sure Richardson would be feeling that generous to the league these days. (Although...he created the mess).  I think Navarro would work out better for Panther fans.  Do not want the Steelers South.  I like the guy's style...hire good people, rely on experts, and not a big ego. Football background with his dad.  Involvement in the community. And he likes football on grass.  Plus...sounds like he does not just want to own an NFL team...he wants to own the Panthers!

We've theorized before that Jerry Richardson might be bitter because the NFL didn't cover for him. Gantt makes it sound like that's a reality.

Gantt also confirms what Albert Breer said a while back, that the NFL wants Richardson to go away as soon as possible.

he only has $3 Billion?  Hes gonna buy the Panthers and only have $400 million left?

I’m sure he’s realized there is only so much money one can spend. 400 mil invested in safe tax free municipal bonds earning 5% a year gives him a life time income of 20 mil a year tax free plus whatever the panthers earn him.

There is very little chance Navarros net worth of 3b is liquid. I  am sure he could maneuver enough to free up 1/2 to 1/3 of that money but the vast majority of the uber rich are rich on paper and not cash.

Vince McMahon had to sell shares of WWE to finance the new American football league.  I am confident Navarro will be liquidating shares of Sherman financial as well.

This is is a good thing though. A guy like Tepper could lose 3bil and be OK. Navarro actually needs the Panthers to be a successful business or he could lose 1/2 his wealth or more. Can’t lose that 3 comma club money.

Good read...

Ben Navarro: Low Profile Billionaire

I'm leaning more and more toward the idea that Navarro is going to win.

Gee, you must be a hell of a leaner!

Any ambiguity left the building a week ago or more. Navarro has won already. (And the fourth bidder, Leon Black, has also been de facto removed from consideration.)

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
