Does DJ Moore mean we cut Russell Shepard??

Torrey Smith and Shep may both be axed. Byrd, when healthy, showed put last year and you don't dump a guy who showed what he showed last season. Samuel was a second round pick and was finding his way in the Dolphins game. Shep showed nothing and we likely save on cap space by cutting both Smith and Shep.

Funchess is a bit of veteran type player now, has been to a super bowl, and could fill the leadership role for that position group. Let us not forget we still have Olsen.

Cutting Torrey Smith would be asinine . Hes the only proven deep threat WR on the roster LMAO.

Sure Moore, Samuel , Byrd have the potential to be that, but the jury is still out. You dont want to bank on pure potential after having a year of piss poor receiving from WRs not named Funchess last year. Clay and Shepard derailed our playoff hopes hard.

Lol, us Byrd supporters posted at the same time. I agree with you. Byrd was clearly better than everyone but Funchess when he was out there. He would have made a difference against NO instead of Cam having two guys who couldn’t catch the ball.

Byrd and Samuel are fast but at no point did either establish themselves as deep threats last season. Theyre also both small , frail, and injury prone. Banking on them and axing Torrey Smith would be hilariously terrible move.

Smith is perfect for being the vet deep threat , hes also quite simular in size to DJ Moore and could teach him alot.

We will keep six receivers - Funchess / Moore / Smith / Wright / Samuel / Byrd

You don't release a player that showed what Byrd did last season, you continue to nurture and develop it. Smith is a bridge to the younger receivers, as well as insurance in the event Funchess' performance in this season price him out of our range IMO. However I also believe we'll retain him.

We saw first hand what a lack of depth at receiver looks like, we lost KB to the trade, and ALL of our speed when Samuel, and Byrd were out respectively. I don't see us being thin in that department again.

I think we role with CMC / CAP / Rookie and potentially cut Fozzy, and keep a 4th HB on the PS vs carrying four into next season. But none the less, I think those six WRs are locks this year.

Byrd is that deep threat, if healthy. For us, we don't have to have Smith now if Byrd can stay healthy. Funchess will play a prominent role in the offense, likely approaching 1,000 yards this season. Byrd showed he can be a guy to stretch the defense vertically, opening holes for our route runners in CMC,  Fun, and now Moore.

To be honest, I never thought much of Smith and with our investment, we could save money by cutting or trading him if the others turn out to provide an element he doesnt.

I think it makes sense if he actually gets playing time and doesnt produce. But cutting him before the season starts before you even really know what any of the WR will do isnt smart IMO. Especially with Byrd and Samuel being banged up last year on multiple occasions, very risky to roll with oft injured players carry your offense vertically for an entire season.
