For those worried about Marquis Haynes size

I know many people here are thinking wtf about this pick because of his weight. His weight is a major concern because we officially drafted him to play DE. Well not to worry, there are successful defensive ends that are close to his size in the league. Vic Beasley weighed about 235 coming out of the draft and we know how well he has done, also Dante Fowler is 250 and  probowler  yannick ngakoue is only 246 right now. Here’s an article about the smallest players at the position:

so please don’t worry, he can easily bulk up 10 pounds and be and effective DE.

Not right away. He will have to sit and learn the game while putting on weight but I see no reason why he couldn’t start in the future.

Haynes is solely a pass rusher.

You know who was also an undersized edge rusher? Everette Brown

Guy was incredibly productive in the SEC. The hope is he can develop into a Mario Addison talent, not Julius Peppers.

And for a 4th Rounder, if he can become Addison like then it is a great pick. We didn't pick him to be a Hall of Famer.

We drafted him to be the 5th DE and develop. If he has any injury at all, I could see him being IRed like we did Hall last year as basically a redshirt and keeping Cox as the 5th DE.

Way more concerned with what we get from Hall this year. Pep, Addison, and Horton are a pretty good group. But we need Hall to be a contributor this year.

Anything we could get from Haynes is a bonus

That's true, but we gave up what turned out to be a 1st for Brown. Haynes was a 4th rounder. Big difference in draft capital.

And if Brown had just been counted on to be a speed rusher and not a starting DE, our perspective may have been different.

I certainly don't hate the pick for a 4th rounder. Addison is undersized and developed into a complete DE. If Haynes can put on 10 pounds and keep his speed, he can be a similar player.

Or amount to nothing. Time will tell. But I think we got good value at a position of need for the pick.

If all he ever becomes is an effective pass rusher, I think we should all be happy. I don't need him to be Beasley.

Yea I agree, HUGE difference rolling the dice on a 4th round guy vs trading away next years 1st. Just saying that Hurney’s track record on drafting undersized pass rushers is an absolute failure.

His track record on drafting big DEs is outstanding though - Peppers, Johnson, Hardy. Hell even Frank Alexander was a decent prospect when he wasn’t smoking weed.

Actually when Beasley was drafted they talked about his struggles against the run. This kid is young and has a big frame to fill out so a lot could happen.

If he eventually turns into a starter, cool.

He's not drafted to be that. He's gonna come in on sub packages, sometimes standing up, sometimes with his hand in the dirt and rush the passer. We'll probably teach him some coverages to mix it up sometimes, he's capable of it. But he comes in and helps day 1 just by his ability to pass rush.

I don't see him ever being a starter.  He is totally a situational pass rusher.  He would get eaten alive by OT's weighing 100 lbs more on running plays.  Hell most FB's are bigger
