Matt Ryan is the first $30 million per year QB

Recommended Posts

As much as I hate the falcons and Matt Ryan he is one of the top nfl QBs and does win.

we will have to pay Cam more unless he ends up putting up numbers like he has the past two years. Every year players salaries continue to rise so it’s only logical to think that in two years top qbs will be paid 35-40 million a year.

I remember a few years ago someone lost their poo with me when I said QB contracts over $25mil a year would soon be the norm and how much of a steal Cams contract was(still is!) and here we sit with Matt Ryan getting $30 mil a year.

wouldnt you love it if you signed a contract where you didn’t even have to try over the next 5 years and still make $100m, I know I would. Good for Matt.

we are a talented team, but I'd hold off on splitting us into 2 teams a little longer.  And Buffalo has dibs anyway.

Oops. I meant to type LA in one of those spots. I caught that literally seconds before your post. I've already corrrected that error.

PS-- I enjoyed the Buffalo comment :)

There's eventually going to have to be some kind of cap put on QB contracts, where they can only make ___% of the cap.  3-4 years from now, QB contracts will be 40 million a year with a 200 million salary cap...insanity.

That’s certainly one option. Would you also have predetermined percentages for other high end positions (ex: LT, DE, CB, etc)?

You could also only apply a portion/percentage of the QB salary towards the salary cap. Let’s say you had a $200 million cap like you cited above. If a QB, was making $40 million, perhaps only a 50% of the charge ($20 million) would be applied to he cap, leaving $180 million for the rest of the roster. I know that seems to put the QB on a different tier than the other players, but as much as some may hate to say it, QB is (in most cases) the most the most important position on the field. The proposed scenario would leave 90% of he cap for the rest of the team instead of 80%.

“Franchise” QBs have traditionally signed between 16-18% of the cap and the numbers will continue to go up as long as the cap increases.

The big news here is that Blank had to escrow $100 million upon signature since teams must set guaranteed monies in an account per the collective bargaining agreement.

Really puts it into perspective just how much of a bargain we've had Cam for all these years.

I've always wondered why fans do this lol. Cam signed the 3rd highest APY contract in football at the time of his signing, with the highest guaranteed across the NFL, while coming off of the worst season of his pro career. Cam hasn't been a bargain. He's been paid with the top QBs in the NFL.

There's nothing wrong with saying that, by the way.

Kinda combining the last part of your post with this, but that's the problem with my scenario.  You're putting these positions on a pedestal.  And even though they are frankly, on a pedestal and more important, getting the CBA to state that and agree to it won't happen easily.  QB gets ___%, DE gets _____% gets realllllly tricky when a diva WR (maybe rightfully so) says he's worth more than the average DE.

Might end up seeing something similar to the NBA model with Max and Supermax contracts, Bird Rights, etc. making their way to the NFL.

The market changes. Newton has been making less than what Matt Ryan was on his previous contract if I'm not mistaken. But my point had more to do with what he means to this team. No other QB in the modern NFL is tasked with being his teams leading rusher, let alone capable of carrying the team to the playoffs in that scenario.

Anyways. I suspect the only reason you quoted me was just to be a dick, but I'll give you a pass for it tonight since I'm feeling charitable.
