The team under Tepper

So if David Tepper is the next owner, what sorts of changes could we expect to see?

Here's my take...

If Tepper looks to a consultant to help rebuild the front office, it'll likely be someone from the Rooney family.  This isn't necessarily a conflict of interest, by the way, especially given that the Steelers and Panthers are in different conferences.

Honestly though, whether it's Rooney or not, a heavy Steelers influence is a logical expectation.

So what does that mean?

As mentioned elsewhere, I believe that if David Tepper buys the team, he'll probably tab Omar Khan as his GM. Khan has been a GM candidate for several teams already, but never got the job. The Panthers job could easily be his shot.

We've also theorized that the NFL might want the Panthers to hire a minority candidate to help smooth over the racist incident with Jerry Richardson. Khan is of mixed Indian/Honduran descent, so he'd qualify.  If they prefer an African-American candidate though, Lake Dawson or Jimmy Raye could be options again.

(the Steelers influence actually could mean more minority hiring in general, to be honest)

For the record, Khan is more of a contract negotiator than a scout. Thus, you'd hope that he'd bring good personnel people with him. Steelers college scouting director Phil Kreidler would be a good choice as perhaps an assistant GM. Pro personnel guy Brandon Hunt could be a possibility as well.

As far as approach, fans who don't like the "build through the draft" philosophy are likely set to be very unhappy. The Steelers are obsessive about building through the draft and rarely ever look at big name free agents. They're also known for taking tough stances when their own guys are looking for huge paychecks, and can afford to since their draft allows them to just tap the "next man up".

I know a lot of folks will theorize that the Steelers influence might mean a 3-4 defense. I don't think that necessarily happens unless the team moves on from Rivera. And yeah, that's possible.

And finally, are we looking at a new stadium?  Yeah, I think so. It may indeed be a contentious fight, but I think it'll happen.

Throw your thoughts in here as well.

Active in free agency

More accountability and accessibility

"Active in free agency" doesn't fit with a Steelers guy. Heavy draft emphasis would be more likely.

All the rest, I could see. Truthfully, I think the Jerry Richardson statue was going away regardless of who bought the team.

Hopefully he relocates the team.

There’s no way the next fan base can be as dumb as the majority of this one.

Go fug yourself. Your stupidity (which has been documented in many, many threads) brings down the fan base's intelligence.

So no matter what we're going to have Steelers influence? Why?

You're wondering why a guy who grew up as a huge Steelers fan and has spent the last nine years as a part owner would have a Steelers influence?

Oh, I don't know

Maybe they'll allow signs in the stadium now lol. I think the atmosphere at BofA or a new stadium will be loosened a bit.

Possible.

Neglected to mention that the Steelers are a little more loose about guys with character issues, so that could change as well.

True and that may very well be but I can see a reason why not.  This guy has an ego. Since he is a minority owner and is relatively new (at least compared to the Rooneys) he may not have a lot of influence there. Yes, the 'Steeler Way' has been pretty successful but if he brings over Steelers people and basically copies their ways, he will not get as much credit as if he installs his own approach. It may borrow on things from the Steelers, such as draft reliant but he built his businesses with a certain philosophy and that may take precedent over doing things the Steeler way. Maybe they can be one in the same but I could very well see him wanting to put his own stamp on developing the organization.  I mean, Richardson already did things similar to the Steelers.

Richardson said he wanted to do things like the Steelers.

He never actually did.

    • A rookie that has never played a snap and a proven 1000K NFL WR are not going to be viewed the same in these type rankings.  And calling draft picks, lotto picks, isn't some new quip I just invented.  take the big 3 Hubbard, AT, insert whatever 3rd Panther you want vs Kamara, Hill, Olave.  Most football folks outside of Carolina are picking the Saints there IMO.
    • You didn’t really address the point, just like you ignored the point about the RBs initially, and saying “they are all lotto picks” is just a really silly reduction because you could say that about literally any player rookie or vet every snap, every game, every year. It is well known that different positions have different hit rates, and I would argue different types of prospects within position groups as well, and that hit rates change the further down in the draft you go. Everybody knows QB is different and that, for example, first round OL have a really high success rate. Using your lotto ticket analogy…again…you are saying a lotto ticket with a 1 in 100 chance of hitting is the exact same thing as a lotto ticket with a 1 in 2 chance of hitting (this is an example, don’t take these odds literally). The point was he is no more of a lotto ticket than the 31yr old receiver coming off a major knee injury, and in my opinion he is better odds with a higher potential “jackpot”. Saying one player is an “lotto ticket” while another isn’t is just not sound logic. You have no idea who will break out, regress, get injured, etc. There are safer bets than others, that’s all. I don’t think Diggs is a safe bet and even if he was, weighing him over all of the Panthers WRs plus 2 1k rushers is just dumb. You can disagree if you want. The list is stupid.
    • Yeah, this is all projections of how it will turn out. Inevitability this list will look ridiculous in a full 2025 sesson hindsight, most likely. Still, I am pretty surprised that so many bristled at being thought of as having very, very lowly ranked WR and TE units. We literally have been for years. All you have to do is just have things stay the same and those are immediately bottom 5 units. It is easy to see why one would be reticent to have lofty expectations in the preseason. Gotta show it first when you are a perennial cellar dweller. That's just life at the bottom.
