our defensive bargains this year

Kyle Love, Defensive Tackle

2018 Cap Hit: $1.3 million

Love is also entering the final season of a 2-year deal, his worth $2.26 million. Love is coming off a career-high 3.5 sacks and he played in 38-percent of Carolina’s defensive snaps last season, placing him third among interior defensive linemen behind only Kawann Short and Star Lotulelei. Love actually had a higher PFF grade than Lotulelei last year (68.5 for Love versus 49.5 for Star) and played more snaps than 2015’s first round pick, DT Vernon Butler. In 2017 Kyle Love arguably outperformed two former first round picks (Lotulelei and Butler) and should make similar contributions in 2018 against a mere $1.3 million cap hit.

also, I didn't realize how much of an impact Horton had, at least as far as statistics go

Peppers at $5M is the best bargain on the team hands down. What other future HOFer coming off of a double digit sack season is playing for $5M this season?

Cockrell isn’t a bargain at all. He may prove to be wth his play, but he sat on the shelf in free agency with little action coming his way for a loooooong time. He saw his market. There wasn’t much of one. We paid his market value.

Well, that's really what it's all about. His play! Don't sleep on him!

You do know that Love was Star’s backup and that most of the time, he and Butler were out there together. They subbed in both DTs. Love played 39% of the snaps (in 16 games) and Butler played 30% in 14 games. Ignoring Butler losing time due to injury, they basically played the same amount per game. Anyone who didn’t notice Butler and Love were a tandem that almost always played side by side hasn’t paid any attention to how Butler actually played.

Also, $1.3M isn’t 1/3 of $1.9M. Butler is on a late first round rookie deal. He’s not expensive.

Well I’m glad he’s performing like a UFA? 1/3 was a random number. Cost included draft capital, but sure just ignore that/ be stupid enough to not realize that

Lol. You call me stupid because I didn’t somehow capitalize his draft pick slot into his salary? Yeah, I’m sure that’s what you did. Geez, you were wrong on two counts, you assumed a large salary for Butler and you said Love did his job when they were paired together and played side by side. Just own it man, it’s OK to be wrong sometimes.

Also, if he was performing like a typical UDFA he wouldn’t be on the team. He wouldn’t play around 40% of snaps when healthy. It’s not like he’s sitting on the bench. He and Love rotated in around 40% of the plays for Short and Star the past couple seasons when healthy. Missing 6 games so far has been the biggest ding on him.

im not sure that the correct usage of capitalize. Regardless, yeah i thought it was pretty obvious that draft capital would be included in cost, since it is part of the cost you pay to obtain that player. I didn't assume a large salary for butler lol. If you have any knowledge about first round pick salaries its easy to estimate what picks are making without looking it up. But good on you for being inside of my mind when i wrote that i guess?

What i can admit to, is not knowing they were usually on the field at the same time. Not sure what that makes me wrong about though. When i said Love was doing Butlers job i meant the job of 3rd best DT on the team, not as a UT vs space eating DT. But I'm sure you'll just say "no you didn't! you don't know anything about these players and now you're trying to cover it up! Just admit it hahaha I'm awesome!"
