Refresher on IR rules... Very tough roster decisions ahead

So, with the news of Amini's injury, I started thinking about possible roster moves.  At first I was thinking "Amini is vested, so let's place him on IR now and consider bringing him back mid season. That frees up a spot to sign someone else."

But no sooner had I tweeted something along those lines than a nagging worry began. I began to remember discussion from last September about IR rules and players needing to be on the 53 to start the season to be eligible for the two "designated to return" slots.

That sent me to google, where I found this from PFT from last year:

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/09/02/players-placed-on-injured-reserve-today-arent-eligible-for-a-return/amp/#referrer=https://www.google.com&amp_tf=From %1%24s

That confirms: to be eligible to be brought back from IR, a player must make the 53 man roster for 24 hours.

So if we hope to bring either Williams or Amini back from IR this season we not only have to keep them active on the 90 until roster cuts, but they have to be on the 53 for the first day of the season, exposing two other healthy players to waivers or being signed by another team.

YIKES. Really tough roster pickle.

What say you Huddle??

TL;DR  Amini and Williams have to start season on 53 if we hope to bring them back this season. Ouch.

Amini is EASILY replaceable. Firstly, NOBODY will pick him up. Secondly, even if he does get picked up, there are a plethora of guards with equal talent just sitting on their couch or on other teams PS. But of course, Ron and Hurney would be stupid enough to waste a roster spot for him.

I’ll be honest. We could release Amini and he’ll be there. We did that with Horton and thankfully he was still there. If we waste an IR return for him we’re stupid. He’s 30 in a month, been released before, injured and sucks. No one picks him up.

I hope we release Amini and use Darryl for IR designated to return.  Unless someone else comes along (hopefully a 9th OL), my guess to the player we hope to bring back after 24 hours is Bryan Cox Jr.

Pretty much this.

Depending on what the medical team is having to say about Williams and his possibility of returning this season, I'd be willing to expose a bottom of the roster player in order to designate him eligible to return. I wouldn't expose a BOA janitor to do the second for Amini.

Cox is healthy. He came off the PUP a few days ago

Unfortunately I'm not sure we can out right release him. One thing for sure we will need a trade at some point. Probably one of our bubble guys for a bubble Guard. This season is sinking fast.

I mean after the 24 hr period after already deciding the final roster and Williams goes to IR Designated to Return.

Wasting that spot on him might be useless. Can he come back? Yes Will he be any good? History says no.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
