1st string offense vs Bills.

Went back and watched the 1st string offense again.  Looks like Thomas is already penciled in as the #2 tight end. He was in on 6 of 14 plays with Cam.

In those 14 plays here are the players and packages we used.

McCaffrey,Olsen and Funchess were in on all 14 snaps. After them:

  1. Smith 10 snaps
  2. Thomas 6 snaps
  3. Moore 5 snaps
  4. Wright 4 snaps
  5. Armah 2 snaps
  6. Claussell 2 snaps

1st Series

  • 1st play, 12 Personnel (McCaffrey, Olsen, Thomas, Funchess, Smith)
  • 2nd play 11 Personnel (McCaffrey, Olsen, Funchess,Smith, Moore)
  • 3rd play  12 Personnel (McCaffrey, Olsen,Thomas, Funchess, Moore)
  • 4th play we ran a jumbo package with both tight ends, and added Blaine Claussell as a blocker with Smith and Funchess remaining the starters at WR
  • 5th play 11 Personnel (McCaffrey, Olsen, Funchess,Moore,Wright)
  •

2nd Series

  • 1st play Claussell and Armah out there in a jumbo package, Funchess, Smith starters at WR. - Nice lil play design as Armah slipped out for an open pass on the playaction
  • 2nd play 12 Personnel (McCaffrey,Olsen, Thomas, Funchess,Smith)
  • 3rd play 12 Personnel (McCaffrey,Olsen, Thomas, Funchess,Smith)
  • 4th play 12 Personnel (McCaffrey,Olsen, Thomas, Funchess,Smith)
  • 5th play 21 Personnel (McCaffrey,Armah, Olsen, Funchess,Smith)
  • 6th play 11 Personnel (McCaffrey, Olsen, Funchess,Smith, Moore)
  • 7th play 11 Personnel (McCaffrey, Olsen, Funchess,Smith, Wright)
  • 8th play 11 Personnel(McCaffrey, Olsen, Funchess,Moore, Wright)
  • 9th play 11 Personnel(McCaffrey, Olsen, Funchess,Smith, Wright)

6 of the plays were out of the 11 personnel, our primary package for at least the past few years

6 of the plays were of out the 12 personnel (2 tight end sets)

Few quick thoughts based on the info above:

  • Was nice to see us trusting Thomas out there with that many 2 TE sets out the gate. He didn't look lost and thats good for a 4th round pick in his first game
  • Funchess seems to be holding onto the number 1 Receiver spot since he was in on all 14 snaps
  • Also glad to see Smith,Moore and Wright get time in at the 3 receiver sets. Hoping to see Samuel get in that mix next week as well.
  • Appears Armah has a chance to play a bigger role in the offense this year. He did well catching a pass and hitting his blocking assignment on McCaffreys 7 yard run. Only 2 snaps but he managed to look good on both of them.

That pass to Armah was awesome to see. Excited to see how he will be used. Won’t be surprised if Norv’s offense makes Armah a pro bowler, especially with how easy Tolbert got in the last few years.

I’m extremely excited about Armah and how he’ll be used in our offense. Pro bowl will be tough, Tolbert mainly got in because of his name and until Armah establishes that I don’t see pro bowl unless he has a lot of TDs.

Thanks for putting this together. Every Panthers fan should be excited about our offensive weapons and Norv. Cam will be a top 3 MVP candidate, no doubt in my mind.

If we win the division and cmc goes for 1800 scrimmage yards will he also be in mvp conversation ?

Great post!

Another thing I'm interested in is time remaining on the playclock when the ball was snapped for each first team snap.

I noticed Cam wasn't clasping furiously for the snap each play. Granted the first preseason game is heavily scripted and such, it was still nice to see.

    • I could be waaaaaaay off about Kon. I do fault myself into, to borrow a NFL phrase heavily "RAS" nerd on players, too much. There are PLENTY of athletic freak shows that are playing overseas(or Amazon delivery) cause they never figured out NBA ball. I can easily miss seeing the talent. Plus did he only have 2 dunks on the season??(is that for real??) I didn't watch over a few hours of duke, but not one point did I think "That Kon guy is a top 4 pick in the upcoming draft". IMO I still foresee Ball bringing the ball up, doing his weak isolation game and never even looking for Kon. That's his best trait according to everyone, shooting right? I do not see ball, bridges, miller or even williams making the extra pass to Kon for him to shoot a 3.  Then defense-wise, Im not ready to type the amount of questions I foresee in his ability for guarding NBA SGs or bench SFs for that matter. Not that NBA players care to defend, but still..... I just feel he's a bad fit for the current hornets, trades are taking place tho... Liam to me is a decent comp for Kon and he fell some, but was a 29 overall pick. Still around 13-21 was the good solid range for Liam and I thought the same for Kon. This is just a classic case of I need to see it. It add to this, Kon is like garlic. Ball is like sugar and Miller is like flour. Mix it together and chef Lee is not going to get me to eat that dish..... Honestly I don't know why Im this vocal about Kon. In past years I would be patience and not post and see what the kid has. The other side, insert classic white boy terms here- _____, ______, _______< etc >. Hornets do desperately need them. His crafty back door cuts, his willingness to stay a extra 2 hours to refine lees plays, keep playing with bruised limbs. I heard from many reports he's mentally tough and hornets by all gods need that. God they are such pussys.  I hope Im wrong and if so, I will give Kon his just props.
