89, Bottom Line, says stop blaming Cam's shoulder

top dawg

Two Words: Ken Wisenhunt. He can fix it. Seriously, Cam has had Chris Weinke, Ken Dorsey and now Scott Turner. Two of those are college qbs with lead feet that didn't do poo in the NFL and the other is a football nerd who's dad is a longtime coach. Again, this team needs proven personnel whether it be on or off the field to get these guys in the right direction. A veteran corner to train these guys, a developmental qb coach, someone on the DL to fuging step up and get them fired up. Too many holes.

In my uninformed opinion, Cam won't change his footwork bc of how strong his upper body is and due to stubborness. Sort of like how Phillip Rivers kept his bizarre throwing motion. What they do works for them. Cam is finally elite in my eyes, but he's not perfect. He overthrows WRs. It is what it is.

Cam may be considered elite, and it might be considered because he plays QB...but anyone that says Cam is elite as a passer is insane. We all want to justify it by saying Cam scores points with his legs...and that the QB position is "evolving" to hybrid players like Cam that can pass at a decent level, and can run at a decent level also.

but look around the league. Those types of QB are the very slim minority. People want to say the QB position is evolving, but no...it still relies on a player than can throw a ball to a player in a position to catch the ball.  Everyone wants to blame RR as a leader of the team. Yet the QB is supposed to be the leader of the team also, but so many refuse to blame him. Which is it? Leaders are, or are not to blame~~~

I know it hurts the ego of many to think that some weak QB like Brees, Mahomes, Rodgers, ...etc plays the position better than a chiseled model specimen of a man like Cam. Its like the 8 pack athlete losing the hot girl to the computer nerd that made lots of money with a start up in silicon valley. Skill trumps athleticism in every sport at some point.

Cam likely wont change..and he should not be forced or pushed to do so. We as a sport franchise were all too happy to ride the thoroughbred that Cam was rather than develop him as a true pocket passer ( frankly I believe its time for this racism to stop that a black quarterback cannot or will not be coached to be a traditional and mental pocket passer)

How can someone who has spent the last 8 years watching Cam Newton hurling his body up and down the field for countless first downs and leaping over endzones with reckless abandon honestly insinuate a laughably absurd notion such as "he doesn't care"?

That would be like saying Luke Kuechly doesn't care. But what kind of idiot would say something like that, right?

I feel like he was definitely on in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

@Mr. Scot

He was on 11, off 12, on 13, off 14(until the end), on 15, off 16, off 17(halfway), off 18(way worse this year).

It’s not all shoulder, and it’s not all him, don’t forget his barely playing with his starting OL(a common fact almost every single person on this forum seems to overlook). Also we know Steve doesn’t like him so that plays into it.

But he’s notoriously bad at staring down his WR’s and his footwork isn’t all there because of his size, his pocket closes a lot faster on him than other QB’s. My least favorite thing he does is his backside rollout, when he gets sacked he doesn’t go down. Anybody remember SB50?

He obviously has a shoulder issue, anything over 10-15 yards is completely inaccurate and dangerous. But he doesn’t deserve all the blame, especially due to injury. When he made the money shots in the past two games, the WR dropped the ball quite literally. A few times right into the opponents hands.

Even though we are statistically a powerhouse offense this year. The finer points are just not there. It was obviously clear Funchess didn’t even have the same playbook.

Smith isn’t wrong, but he isn’t 100% right and still holding a grudge obviously.

Footwork? Obviously ss known nothing about football or Cam, and clearly a racist

I'm assured by the huddle it's because his weapons suck, wright was open but not open enough, bad oline, a hurt shoulder and shitty coaching.

I think touch on the ball is his biggest flaw, more so then footwork.  Think over the years of how many times he threw piss missiles at people and they bounced off or wasn't ready for it and caused either a INT or a incompletion.   Little softer touch on certain throws, could have made a world of difference in some games outcomes.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
