the NFL’s Career Development Advisory Panel has compiled a list of viable G.M. candidates. PFT has obtained the list from a league source with knowledge of its contents.

They are as follows, in no particular order:

  • Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin
  • former Giants G.M. Jerry Reese
  • Vikings assistant G.M. George Paton
  • former Raiders G.M. Reggie McKenzie
  • ESPN analyst Louis Riddick
  • Saints assistant G.M. (and former Dolphins G.M.) Jeff Ireland
  • 49ers senior personnel executive (and former Lions G.M.) Martin Mayhew
  • Jaguars G.M. Dave Caldwell (who is available for a G.M. job that entail control over the football operations, since he doesn’t have it in Jacksonville)
  • Washington senior V.P. of player personnel Doug Williams
  • Cowboys assistant director of player personnel Will McClay
  • Patriots V.P. of player personnel Nick Caserio
  • Ravens assistant G.M./G.M. in waiting Eric DeCosta
  • Chargers senior executive (along with current AAF Salt Lake G.M. and former Seahawks and Saints G.M.) Randy Mueller.

Of the list, I'm intrigued by Caserio, Paton, and Reese. Riddick is interesting, he certainly sounds smart on TV, but I have no idea how it would translate to a front office. I'm also interested in Ireland, but I'm wary of his Miami days. Actually most of the former GMs had pretty bad records in their last stints.

Jason LaCanfora reported that there's a load of buzz around George Paton this offseason. And heck, it would be kind of cool to have General (Manager) George Paton in charge of the Panthers.

For the record, Paton has interviewed for the Panthers GM position before. He was one of the candidates the year Gettleman was hired.

My favorite potential candidate at the moment isn't on the list though. Eagles VP of Player Personnel Joe Douglas is the guy I'd love to see us hire. Omar Khan could still be an option as well.

Sadly, we haven't moved on from our current when just yet, but here's hoping...

Drafting accumen needs to be priority A through Z.  There's enough "salary cap gurus" that assistants can more than manage that role.

Reese's last few drafts were a disaster for the Giants.  People bitch about Gettleman, but imagine if he drafted Flowers/Apple back to back with mid 1st rounders.

Don't want anyone from the Raiders or Bengals either.

Vikings and Cowboys have had some outstanding draft success lately.  Paton and McClay should be given interviews.

Id probably rather keep Hurney over most of those guys especially Reese, McKenzie, anyone from Bengals, Lions, Raiders, Redskins, Jags, Cowboys....

Those are far from the only candidates.

I would add though that judging them by the team they come from is just as invalid with personnel guys as it is with players. And it goes in both directions.

Will McClay of the Cowboys has been getting buzz on this front for years.  His being stuck under an organization run by Jerry Jones doesn't invalidate his talent.

Likewise, Nick Caserio is on this list on an annual basis, but a lot of Patriots guys are on a lot of lists. Having seen their prior record away from Belichick, I wouldn't touch a single one of them.

    • You said the team goes limp-dick in the playoffs because RBA won't change. (Note that you did not suggest what changes you think he needs to make). You then stated "Rod will never change anything." I can only infer that the team continues to fall out of the playoffs because RBA doesn't/won't change. Therefore, if RBA will never change anything, the team will fall out of the playoffs. I mean, that is literally the line of logic you posted. So, I'm not sure what you're suggesting, since I don't have a crystal ball.
