XFL fires a shot across the NFL's bow

The AAF is what everyone should be talking about, as it is affiliated with a ton of former GMs, coaches, and players.  Furthermore, has a stronger network backing and plans to serve as essentially a minor league for the NFL.  Our very own Garrett Gilbert will be contracted to the Apollos hehe.

Ebersol, Polian, Hines Ward, Polamolu, it's a legitimate major network contracted league.  They will have a year ahead of the XFL and their season will be like how the Summer League is for the NBA.   It's been carefully crafted in conjunction with the NFL and you'll see many commercials surface in the playoffs, they're in training camp.

XFL will be a black hole unless they somehow pull something out of their as$.

Will they also sign players out of HS?  Otherwise I feel the XFL could have a leg up in the long run if done right.

Interesting that both leagues have teams in Orlando, Memphis, and Birmingham.  The others will have no direct competition in their respective markets.

Not a threat to NFL but could effect NCAA.  If the pay is enough and quality of coaches good then they could develop into a decent minor league system where players get paid and do not have to pass Western Humanities to play.

If they were successful that way then you could see other leagues try the same tactic, forcing NCAA to change.  Not holding my breath but I would love this scenario.

This 100%. It'll be interesting for sure if NCAA system is threatened. Most D1 colleges have been investing deeply into sports (mostly football) programs, so it could have a drastic impact on campus finances. I'm all for it because I feel like this investment that schools have been doing the last 10-15 years has been a major factor in the rising costs for college. We will see.

Maybe not, but remember that NFL rookie contracts are limited now.

If the XFL can throw more money at him than an NFL team can, who knows?

Getting a highly sought-after prospect like that could give them instant credibility. That's kind of how the USFL got its start.

Winner winner. Jim Kelly right? If the new xfl does it right, they can draw players and $ from the NFL. Step one is all about getting the kids to come to xfl for $ vs NFL. We are closer to that era now with the cap limits in the rookie class vs say 10 years ago when rookies could negotiated contracts to whatever the player and team could agree to.

Time is ripe to give the players the upper hand again. XFL will give them bargaining power at minimum and another spot to earn more $$$$ for some.

Coaches and institutions get rich while kids either give up their bodies for free or go into major debt paying for overpriced schooling.  Seems like an excellent system

Could also be a great spot for players to go to avoid being tagged.

Unsure about their policies for signings but I think it will be interesting.

A general comment: Many are trying to pin this XFL v NFL narrative when in actuality it's The AAF w/NFL silent backers v XFL.

Without the incredibly deep pockets that the NFL has, the XFL will never compete for players or viewers effectively. If you can meet the funding of the NFL salary cap each year, you won't attract any good athletes.

It'll probably be a bigger drawn that arena football, but not by much.

I mean, I can name more USFL teams from memory than I can the last round of the XFL. Or the current version.
