What played a factor was that Charlotte reminds Reid of where he grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and he got what he considered a fair market deal.

I CHANGED MY MIND. HORRIBLE SIGNING. HOW DARE YOU COMPARE ANYTHING IN NORTH CAROLINA TO THAT fuging SEWER THAT IS LOUISIANA.

Where do you come up with "heavy incentives"?

And let's be honest, there was a TON of tepedation after the fact on that Kalil's contract. Most of the hope was threefold. One, it was Ryan's brother. Two, Matsko had already succeeded with a reclamation LT on Oher. Three, Gettleman had already succeeded with a reclamation LT in Oher.

The grass is always greener on the other side. Had we re-signed Kalil to that deal after having him play decently in one season the reaction would've been a lot different.

From what I've read there's a lot of incentives in the deal. Is that wrong?

Betting on Matt Kalil was absurd. He's never been a good left tackle in the NFL, even in his rookie season where he was just being overrated. Vikings fans were so happy when he wasn't re-signed. How often are fanbases excited to release an early first round pick, especially when it created a huge hole in one of the most important positions on a roster? Never, they knew he was garbage. He was coming off a season where he missed 14 games, and had hip surgery. It was STUPID, especially considering that Andrew Whitworth was on the market.

Go read those threads again. You're not going to find much trepidation, you'll find a lot of this fanbase rationalizing the deal as somehow greatly negotiated.

Last year Panthers cut Kurt Coleman, soon after saints signed him to a 3 yr 16 million pre-free agency. That proved to be a HUGE mistake. Not only was he vastly overpaid, but didn't get many snaps too. Picking his brain was very expensive.

Reids deal may be similar, or you could look at it like this- 4 yr 24million with 12 guaranteed.

There was still a ton of sentiment that Gettleman was a GM virtuoso back then that played into the reaction to Kalil's signing. Even with that, yes there was still plenty of doubt and hand wringing from more balanced posters.

Just like there's a lot of sentiment that Hurney is a disaster waiting to happen playing into the reaction to Reid's re-signing.

Yes, the Kalil sign-in was atrocious. Probably the worst move this franchise has made since the Sean Gilbert disaster.

when your owner cares more about social justice than winning games

lol only in 2019 can someone be frustrated with a person caring about another persons well being.

I'm not saying that is the case with Tepper and this signing, just that this post comes off incredibly stupid.

From what I read (NFL.com) the deal is $22M over three years, $10M guaranteed, with incentives that could push it to $24M.  That doesn't sound incentive heavy to me, which is okay since we are not dealing with somebody showing decline and needing to prove he can still play in the NFL.

On a different subject, I've seen people on this thread referring to him as a FS.  Correct me if I am wrong, but did they not sign him as a SS?

The devil is always in the details. I expect this contract to basically be a two year deal with a team option for the third. $10M guaranteed likely means a $10M signing bonus which will be spread out at $3.33M per contract year. How the salary is structured will be interesting. I'm expecting it to be structure in a way that it costs us more to cut him than keep him in both of the first two years essentially guaranteeing him two years. Something along the lines of $2M/$4M/$6M. In that scenario, we could cut him after two years and save $6M in cap in that third year and he'd basically walk away with $16M after two years and we'd carry $3.33M in dead space that third year. Or, we could extend him or carry him the third year at a $10.33M cap figure.

Again, that's all pure speculation but something like that is what I expect. I'd be willing to bet there's more money in the form of roster bonuses involved as well.

Yeah it’s something closer to this than the people saying it’s 7.5 against the cap.

Signing bonus is not held against the cap. Correct?

    • Yeah, I could jump right into the unbelievable Bryce debate now that some people are trying to flip the script because Bryce Young has, at most, a handful of decent games as a pro, but that's going to work itself out. Suffice it to say that I've seen better QBs (with an s) in a Panthers uniform, and I've certainly seen better QBs be drafted while we're playing around with Bryce, one of them who beat the crap out of us already this season... Let's forget about Bryce (and his markedly underwhelming play since he's been here); I think that most sane fans will agree that drafting him was an error, but it happens. Sure, it doesn't happen to the tune of King's ransom---including your main receiver---but it happens. You bet, you lose. Speaking of receivers...and betting and losing... Oh, man, we drafted Xavier Legette. Yes, just like with Bryce, I've entered "the dark side." Some Huddlers were telling us from the beginning, and they were right. But, I'm not apologizing for waiting to see what a guy's got before making my decision on him. X was a one-year wonder at South Carolina who parlayed some really nice production that season, a great personality and thick country accent, into becoming a first round pick (but only in Carolina). For Dan Morgan and company, He was a big swing that has turned into a big whiff (and I can still feel the ill breeze from that one). Sh¡t happens, right? Well, not so fast. Ladd McConkey was the decidedly more polished receiver who was literally ready to hit the ground running as soon as stepping onto the field as a pro. Ladd was never the biggest guy (though not the smallest), but he was the guy that could run routes, always seemed to get open---no question---and had the same speed as X, but with legit quickness and nuanced shake and bake. But Dan chose the project. He chose the guy where the game speed looks more like a tractor trailer than a 5.0 mustang. Look, I've supported X (just like Bryce) many many a day, but no more. Now I'm not saying that I won't root for the guy. Just like with Bryce, he seems like a great kid. But as far as giving excuses for the kid, and, perhaps more importantly, waiting for some miraculous breakout, I'm done with that. I've seen enough. You don't draft a project for a project. And yes, Bryce had proven to be a project after his first season. In my mind, drafting a supposedly number one receiver that needs lots of development for a starting quarterback that needs immediate help to try and further his development is not going to lead to good things. Pick the surest guy. Or at least pick the one who appears to be the surest guy, because picking can be tricky... especially when you're too busy tricking yourself.
    • Winning ain't gonna make my eyes lie to me. Context matters, and it will always matter in the game of football.
    • That TD pass to Legette against Miami. Elite. The play where Bryce rolls right to buy time until Tet can reverse field.  Bryce pumps as multiple defenders close in.  He barely gets it away before he takes a big time hit.  Beautiful off platform throw and great catch by Tet.   The second TD to Tet against Dallas where Bryce dips and turns his shoulder in to evade the pass rusher.  Resets and finds Tet in the end zone. Dude embodies the Keep Pounding mantra.
