Bill Barnwell: 5 offseason moves Panthers must make

ESPN is often garbage, but Bill Barnwell here is very smart. He's usually spot on with his predictions (i.e. 5 moves for each team, which teams will rise, decline), even though he likes to criticize the Panthers for some odd reason. Here were his predictions for 2018:

  1. Right the ship (hire the right owner; Hurney was put on paid leave at that time; accused for harassment by his ex-wife)
  2. Convince Peppers to come back & sign
  3. Let Norwell & Star leave; receive draft picks
  4. Work on an extension for Funchess (so glad we didn't do that)
  5. Pick up Shaq's 5th year option

His 2017 predictions were:

  1. Franchise Kawaan Short
  2. Bring back Addison or CJ
  3. Release Jonathon Stewart
  4. Resign Trai Turner
  5. Sign WR DeSean Jackson (not a bad idea at the time)

So statistically, 60-80% of his predictions will occur. I'd say we'll decline Butler's 5th year, draft Kalil's replacement in the 2nd-3rd round, find a free safety (draft a S in the 1st round) & add an edge rusher (FA).

I am pretty amazed to see people even discussing keeping Kalil. How quickly everyone forgets how insanely bad he is.

Hell, I never really wanted him, but as long as he isn't getting paid the same for doing nothing, and we have an actual replacement, then cut away. There has to be a plan though.

Nor did I. I will never understand the decision to offer that contract. I have maintained that was a fireable offense for Gettleman.

This is great, he really knows what he's talking about.

Not the same situation. We are done with guaranteed money so we can just release him and owe the same money if we traded him. Osweiler still had guaranteed money so Denver (or Houston, I can’t remember who traded him) was actually able to get out from under new money. No reason to give someone a draft pick if we don’t save cap space.

Got it, was thinking he still had some guaranteed money on the deal, my bad

Hey, could you elaborate a little more on cap ramifications for trading Kalil? I seriously doubt there is a team that would give up a lot for him. But, assuming someone did wouldn't the new team be responsible for a portion of the contract?

    • One thing about it, he's not thinking about retiring. I found it odd that some Huddlers were taking rumors and running with them, imagining a slow down and "up-playing" injuries. Moton feels great and is still in his prime according to him, and his game is still indicative of his thoughts.  Sure, it may ultimately come down to economics, but I am sure that everyone involved is motivated to keep him in Charlotte.
    • I think the knee stuff with Moton has been blown way out of proportion. The exact quote was “It’s chronic stuff. Most linemen deal with it. But it’s just figuring out what we can do to make sure it’s limited and I’m still able to explode off it, which right now I can and I feel like I can in the future,” After a while, you start learning more about it and what can we do to make sure it’s as little of an issue as possible. I feel like I’m moving like I was when I was younger.” I don't view that as a guy who's saying his knees are on their last leg I see that as a 10-year NFL olineman saying that obviously after 10 years of playing a really physical sport, he's never truly gonna be 100% healthy again and he's gonna need to spend more time with the training staff to ensure his body can continue to perform at a high level. I think Moton has another 3 to 5 years left if he wants to continue playing.
    • So much crying. Tiresome. All of you should have had enough time to come to terms with the team picking up his 5th year...
