NFL: Todd Gurley has arthritis in his knee

It’s the same knee that underwent an ACL repair in 2014. If the report is accurate, what will the Rams do about it? Coach Sean McVay discussed stem-cell treatment options for the knee this week at the Scouting Combine. If Gurley has arthritis that comes from a loss of cartilage, microfracture surgery presumably would be a possibility. However, the Rams have said that Gurley won’t have surgery.

The good news for Gurley, but the bad news for the Rams, is that Gurley’s contract gives him a high degree of financial security. As of the third day of the 2019 league year, he’ll have $34.5 million fully guaranteed and another $9.5 million still guaranteed for injury.

So the overriding question is whether and to what extent the Rams will get a return on their $45 million injury-guaranteed investment in Gurley. He generated more than 1,800 yards from scrimmage through the first 14 games of the year, but then it all started to fall apart for Gurley, with two missed regular-season games, a solid performance in the divisional round against Dallas, and two lackluster showings in the NFC title game and Super Bowl LIII.

 

 

The Rams had already stated they wanted to keep CJ Anderson around, but it now appears they have even more reason to do so.

They will keep him another year and find a way to move on. Sucks for him and the team but he was run into the ground. Meanwhile, CJ lands in their lap to soften the blow to the team. Doesn't sound like this will have a happy ending for Gurley, outside of being a millionaire.

Anyone know of anyway this could be turned around or is it just a matter of time to let it run its course?

The article speculates on microfracture surgery as an option, but that's very hit or miss. There's also talk of stem cell treatments, but overall it doesn't sound good.

Shame, too. He's a super talented player.

I saw it of PFT an hour ago and it didnt sound vary hopefull. Repairing caralige? Yikes. Very bleak for the dude with as you said, tons of tallent.

Hey if this really is it for him he got way further than guys like Marshon Lattimore. There's plenty of life after football, especially when you start with that much money. Tough break but he's still in a great spot in life.

Sucks for him. He will still be a multi-millionaire so don't feel too bad for him. Degenerative joint disease is a very common consequence of ACL surgery. His just manifested quite early.

I did just after posting, that's a huge out and maybe the reason why we are hearing about it today? Soften the blow when the axe drops? Damn, never would have expected an out like that with all the guaranteed money when he signed.

I would bash Kalil some more but it's just too depressing that he is still here and people want to keep him. At least with Gurley he was a good player and it actually hurts to think about him being gone.

We will see. Paying another 7 million for a guy that cant stay healthy is just moronic if you can use that money on someone that at least has a chance at availability. The whole point of being a back up is at least being available, if nothing else. All that keeping him logic sounds like a prepaired excuse for the decision makers.

March 15 is as important a day for the future of the organization as any I can remember. It’s going to show if we have any sort of competence in the FO. Or that it’s business as usual. Sentiment over success.
